Short description  This document served as a discussion paper for the invitational meeting which the Health Council of the Netherlands hosted on September 29, 2005.
It describes current developments and challenges in the field of public health and health care and it gives an overview of institutions in Europe providing science advice on public health issues.

In the paper the initiative for establishing a 'European expertise network for science advice on public health' is presented.

The last chapter presents questions to be discussed during the invitational meeting hosted by the Health Council of the Netherlands in The Hague on 29 September 2005.
