Cohesion Policy is one of the main tools for the development of European cities. Nevertheless, the connection between cohesion policy and the role of cities in shaping the future of Europe is not always obvious. The workshop aims at connecting these aspects through presentations from different perspectives.

A major input into the discussion is made by the recently released "Future of Cities" report. This report intends to build on existing knowledge to highlight drivers shaping the urban future, identifying key challenges that cities will have to overcome and strengths to proactively build their desired future. The main aim is to open up and steer a discussion on what the future of cities can and should be. This report is the fruit of a "collaborative intelligence" exercise supported by the Community of Practice on Cities co-steered by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO), under the umbrella of the Knowledge Centre for Territorial Policies.
