Demographic change is a major policy challenge in Europe. Over 40% of European regions are losing population and the population of predominantly rural regions is projected to fall by 7.9 million by 2050. The aim of this session is to identify major challenges and opportunities in depopulated areas based on European evidence and on the experience of some Member States in order to build sustainable strategies for post 2020 cohesion policy.
