Many cities and regions are developing circular economy strategies but are still facing challenges in their progress towards circularity. The European Commission's Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) and the Hubs for Circularity (H4C) aim to bridge this gap by facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing. This session will inform you about the services they provide to EU cities and regions and present innovative circular solutions, e.g. for enabling urban-industrial symbiosis.

Session summary
On 11 October, the European Commission’s DG Research and Innovation (R&I) hosted an info session on ‘Boosting circularity and seeking industrial-urban symbiosis through local-regional collaboration’. This interactive session brought together representatives from local and regional authorities, businesses and academia. Participants gained knowledge on the concept of industrial symbiosis (IS) and industrial-urban symbiosis, get introduced to the policy context and related R&I actions, and explored the different roles cities and regions could play in IS as enablers, facilitators, promoters and consumers. Participants also got introduced to the various advantages of IS, including: efficiency gains, cost savings and knowledge exchange opportunities. The session featured three presentations from Kalundborg, an established Danish industrial symbiosis cluster and a true frontrunner, REWIMET, a cluster for innovation in metal recycling in Central Germany, and the Technological Corporation of Andalucía, a private foundation and a strategic alliance of companies and research groups. In the discussion, the participants addressed several major challenges to industrial symbiosis, such as: building trust, securing funds as well as stakeholder mobilisation. Key success factors were identified, such as: the definition of mutual goals, the openness of data and the active communication with relevant partners and competent authorities. European initiatives, like the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative and Hubs4Circularity, facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing on these issues.
