European Week of Regions and Cities

The State of User-Centric Cities and Regions: How Local Governments Perform in Delivering Digital Services

When: 14/10/2022 11:00 - 12:00 CET

Venue: Virtual

Organiser: The Lisbon Council, Eurocities and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland

Europe’s vision for a digital decade commits governments to move all key public-service delivery online within the European Union by 2030, and the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) devotes 43 billion euros to digitising public administration. Tracking progress for these ambitious targets and spending is crucial, yet local governments, which are expected to deliver such services to European citizens, lack tools and metrics to assess their performance.

To tackle this problem 21 cities and regions have come together in the UserCentriCities project to deliver the UserCentriCities Dashboard, a unique tracking service of user-centricity performance in cities and regions. How are cities and regions progressing in delivering digital services that truly meet the needs of citizens? And how can they improve?

Convening within the framework of the European Week of Regions and Cities, this high-level roundtable brings together top researchers, local government officials and policymakers to look at the state-of-play for cities and regions moving towards user-centric digital government and discuss what works and what doesn’t. The discussion will be informed by The State of UserCentriCities, a new policy brief that offers new evidence and metrics on the performance of European cities and regions in putting citizens’ needs at the heart of their public services.
