The conference aims to highlight the opportunities offered by the European Research Council (ERC) in terms of research collaborations and career opportunities for Japanese scientists. The conference takes place with the support of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) that have kindly offered to co-host the event at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, one of the leading research universities in Japan.
To date, 32 Japanese scientists have won ERC research grants worth about € 41 million. Japanese scientists also work in the research teams of ERC funded principal investigators. In order to enhance the collaboration between Japanese scholars in ERC-funded researches, the JSPS and the JST have signed agreements enabling Japanese scholars to conduct short-term study visits of ERC-funded research teams. The ERC grants provide sufficient flexibility to allow international visits of the ERC-supported principal investigator and/or members of their team, if this is necessary to meet the scientific objectives of the ERC grant. Collaborative possibilities that are created through the implementing arrangements of the ERC with the JSPS and the JST could benefit from this possibility in order to further enhance scientific cooperation between the EU and Japan.
