Mogherini to travel to the Western Balkans in early March

High Representative Federica Mogherini will travel to the Western Balkans from 1 to 4 March. She will visit Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. During her visit to the region, Mogherini will meet with political authorities, including representatives of governments, of political parties, and of Parliaments.

Ahead of the visit, High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini said: "For the European Union, the work with the Western Balkans, a region in the heart of Europe, is a key priority. I work to see every single one of the Western Balkans partners move forward on the reform path, towards the European Union, to ensure the process is irreversible. Regional cooperation and good neighbourly relations remain essential in this context.”

Promoting the resilience of states and societies in areas surrounding the EU, is a strategic priority of the Global Strategy. As such, resilience in the Western Balkans is a top goal for EU external action.

EU priorities at UN human rights fora 2017

On 27 February 2017, the European Council adopted conclusions on the EU's priorities on human rights in the United Nations for this year. They show the EU's strong commitment to the United Nations human rights system, including participating in its various fora.

At a time when human rights are coming under attack the EU will defend and promote the universality, indivisibility, interdependence, and interrelatedness of human rights for everybody. This is in line with the EU Global Strategy which calls on EU institutions to ensure human rights are a central part of all EU policies. Strengthening human rights at home and abroad, is also an important contribution to the resilience of states and societies, which means they can withstand and recover from conflict much faster.

Federica Mogherini meets with US Vice-President Mike Pence

HRVP Federica Mogherini met with US Vice-President Mike Pence on his first official visit to the European Union. This follows Mogherini's recent visit to the US where she exchanged views with her counterpart Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and other key members of the new administration as well as Congress. Both sides reaffirmed a strong willingness to continue building the EU-US partnership based on clear values and interests, and cooperating closely on bilateral as well as international issues.

In line with the strategic priorities of the EU Global Strategy, the EU and US are pursuing further cooperation in areas such as security and defence, including on counter-terrorism.
