Mogherini to travel to the Western Balkans in early March

High Representative Federica Mogherini will travel to the Western Balkans from 1 to 4 March. She will visit Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. During her visit to the region, Mogherini will meet with political authorities, including representatives of governments, of political parties, and of Parliaments.

Ahead of the visit, High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini said: "For the European Union, the work with the Western Balkans, a region in the heart of Europe, is a key priority. I work to see every single one of the Western Balkans partners move forward on the reform path, towards the European Union, to ensure the process is irreversible. Regional cooperation and good neighbourly relations remain essential in this context.”

EU priorities at UN human rights fora 2017

On 27 February 2017, the European Council adopted conclusions on the EU's priorities on human rights in the United Nations for this year. They show the EU's strong commitment to the United Nations human rights system, including participating in its various fora.

At a time when human rights are coming under attack the EU will defend and promote the universality, indivisibility, interdependence, and interrelatedness of human rights for everybody. This is in line with the EU Global Strategy which calls on EU institutions to ensure human rights are a central part of all EU policies. Strengthening human rights at home and abroad, is also an important contribution to the resilience of states and societies, which means they can withstand and recover from conflict much faster.

EU an indispensable global power, Mogherini tells Munich Security Conference

"The European Union will remain a stable, reliable, predictable partner for many and for security in the sense of a collective security based on cooperation", High Representative Federica Mogherini said at the 53rd Munich Security Conference.

In times of "predictable unpredictability", the EU Global Strategy sets out a rules-based global order as a key interest of the European Union. This can be best achieved by engaging with other actors and creating stable partnerships, including maintaining the Security of our Union with partners such as NATO.

HRVP Mogherini discusses Africa and development with G20 Foreign Ministers

HRVP Federica Mogherini and G20 Foreign Ministers gather in Bonn on 16 February, hosted by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel. A special focus is on Africa and development. The EU, together with its Member states, is the world's biggest aid donor with €68 billion in 2015 alone.  The EU is revising the way it does development cooperation through the European New Consensus, which is linked to achieving sustainable development in partner countries in Africa through the External Investment Plan.

This ambition also falls under the EU Global Strategy's strategic priority of building state and societal resilience, as well as mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals into its external action.

European Parliament supports trade deal with Canada

CETA marks the beginning of a new era in the EU-Canada relationship. Today, the European Parliament voted in favour of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada, concluding the ratification process of this deal at the EU level.

Welcoming the outcome of the vote held in Strasbourg, President Jean-Claude Juncker said: "Today's vote by the European Parliament is an important milestone in the democratic process of ratification of the agreement reached with Canada and it also allows for its provisional entry into force. As a result, EU companies and citizens will start to reap the benefits that the agreement offers as soon as possible. This trade deal has been subject to an in-depth parliamentary scrutiny which reflects the increased interest of citizens in trade policy. The intense exchanges on CETA throughout this process are testimony to the democratic nature of European decision making. This progressive agreement is an opportunity to shape globalisation together and influence the setting of global trade rules. The best example of this is the work that we are already doing with our Canadian friends to establish multilateral rules to deal with investment issues."

The EU Global Strategy underlines the need to work with partners towards strengthening the multilateral system based on shared rules, and highlights the role of trade in fostering a more stable and prosperous world order.
