High Representative Mogherini welcomes outcome of G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini today welcomed the outcome of the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Lucca.

“We adopted common positions on all the main international issues in line with EU policies,” she said after two days of intensive talks, covering Syria, the crisis in eastern Ukraine, the Middle East Peace Process, and security in Asia, Iran, Africa, Iraq and Libya. Thematic topics discussed included migration, maritime security, non-proliferation and disarmament, counter terrorism, climate change, peace and security in the framework of the United Nations, and cyber security.

Following last week’s Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, organised and hosted by Mogherini, and the chemical weapons attack in Idlib, G7 foreign ministers also discussed the Syria crisis with their counterparts from a number of countries in the region, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Qatar.

Whilst in Lucca, the High Representative had several bilateral meetings and took part in a wreath-laying ceremony with Italian Foreign minister Alfano and US Secretary of State Tillerson in honour of the victims of the 1944 massacre in Sant’Anna di Stazzema.

EU an indispensable global power, Mogherini tells Munich Security Conference

"The European Union will remain a stable, reliable, predictable partner for many and for security in the sense of a collective security based on cooperation", High Representative Federica Mogherini said at the 53rd Munich Security Conference.

In times of "predictable unpredictability", the EU Global Strategy sets out a rules-based global order as a key interest of the European Union. This can be best achieved by engaging with other actors and creating stable partnerships, including maintaining the Security of our Union with partners such as NATO.

HRVP Mogherini discusses Africa and development with G20 Foreign Ministers

HRVP Federica Mogherini and G20 Foreign Ministers gather in Bonn on 16 February, hosted by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel. A special focus is on Africa and development. The EU, together with its Member states, is the world's biggest aid donor with €68 billion in 2015 alone.  The EU is revising the way it does development cooperation through the European New Consensus, which is linked to achieving sustainable development in partner countries in Africa through the External Investment Plan.

This ambition also falls under the EU Global Strategy's strategic priority of building state and societal resilience, as well as mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals into its external action.

High Representative Mogherini underlines importance of EU-US ties

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini paid a two-day visit to Washington for talks with the new US administration and senior members of Congress.

"We believe that there are many fields on which we coincide and where it is vital for the US to work together with the European Union and for the European Union to work with the US, be it in counter-terrorism, be it economic growth, job creation. Having said that, we are maybe entering a time of a more pragmatic and transactional kind of relationship with the United States, based on EU principles and interests", Mogherini said. She also spoke about the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East Peace Process, migration, and the Iran agreement.

During her visit, the High Representative met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, National Security Adviser General Michael Flynn, Senior Adviser Jared Kushner and with several senators, in particular Bob Corker and John McCain.

The High Representative also attended an event at the Atlantic Council: "A Conversation with H.E. Federica Mogherini".

Defending Europe - Translating mutual assistance into action

In her Clingendael publication, "Defending Europe - Translating mutual assistance into action" Anne Bakker argues that procedures and institutional support alone are not enough to translate the mutual assistance commitment into action. The EU’s new task in protection of Europe also needs to be translated into capabilities.

Furthermore, the existing institutional capacity needs to be reinforced. In line with the EU-NATO declaration of December, synchronisation between the IPCR arrangements and NATO’s Crisis Response System is needed. Finally, intelligence sharing between member states and EU actors needs to be strengthened.
