Since 2011, when the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) received accreditation from the Directorate General of International Development Cooperation (DEVCO) of the European Commission to perform operations of delegated cooperation with EU resources, the Spanish participation in these programmes has substantially increased.
Since then, AECID has been responsible of 15 projects amounting to EUR 137 million. Of these, 12 have been awarded in Latin America, two in Africa and one in Asia; in the areas of food security, education, governance and transportation.
This year, the AECID is responsible for coordinating the campaign of the EYD2015 in Spain with a broad program of events including exhibitions, performances and other activities in different parts of the country. It also includes activities related to cooperation on gender equality, one of the priorities of the Spanish Cooperation.
In the framework of the EYD2015, last february European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica visited Spain. He met with Jesús Gracia, Secretary of State for International Cooperation and with the Secretary General of International Development Cooperation, Gonzalo Robles.
Spain, like other European partners, contributes to the funds that the European Union manages on cooperation for development. In 2015, the Spanish contribution represents 7.98% of the general budget of the European Union in this area and 7.85% of the European Development Fund, which finances cooperation policies with the group of countries in Africa-Caribbean-Pacific, with the aim of fighting poverty.
