The Brussels-based Research Executive Agency (REA) was set up in 2007. It began work in 2009, implementing parts of the 7th Framework Programme for Research & Innovation (FP7). In 2013 its remit expanded to include managing much of Horizon 2020, the EU's biggest ever R&I framework programme (2014 – 2020).

As well as managing programmes itself, the REA provides administrative and logistic support to other Commission departments managing H2020 and FP7.
