The B.A. and B.A.(Hons) are the Faculty’s staple undergraduate degrees. They differ from each other mainly in that the B.A. is spread equally over two areas of study, whereas the B.A.(Hons) focuses on a single area, with a secondary area as subsidiary. All undergraduate students follow two areas of study during the first year, but those who wish and qualify to proceed to the honours track continue with one area of study, in addition to a limited number of credits in the subsidiary area to be taken during the second year. Undergraduates may choose a combination of any two areas of study, with some restriction imposed only by practical time-table requirements. The duration of the degree courses is three years. Honours students write research-based dissertations or long essays in the final stages of their studies. The weighting of the course components in establishing the final grade is biased in favour of the later parts of the course, on the principle that the fairest evaluation of a student is at the point of exit.

The overall aim of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Work programme is to equip students with the necessary social work knowledge, values and skills required to practise as a social worker. This is done through the teaching of a variety of study units, some of which are theory based and others which are practice based. Since the course is generic in nature it seeks to provide students with knowledge, skills and abilities which will lend themselves useful in any practice setting. In addition, the programme is the only route in Malta through which individuals can enter the social work profession, and therefore an important aim of the programme is to expose students to different social work settings in Malta and Gozo. This is primarily done through the placements which students carry out during the course, but also through other tasks set by different study-units.

The Master of Arts in Hospitaller Studies is offered at both the University of Malta and the University of Malta – Gozo Campus. The programme’s main aim is to study the history of the Hospitaller Order of St John. Through the Order’s charitable and military activities the Hospitaller fulfilled a “great civilising and defensive function... in the development of Europe”. Another significant role was the Order’s great social and economic role. The intelligent administration of the Order’s massive estates constituted an unwittingly formative influence, a powerful force of continuity, and a constructive force in European civilisation. The course intends to study all these major phases of the Order as it gradually evolved within the wider framework of the historical development of Europe and the Mediterranean.

This course is intended to provide an advanced level of education, training and research for graduates in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Surgery and any other area of study deemed relevant by the Board of Studies. The course enables students to acquire advanced knowledge and research skills that could be employed in the academic and clinical setting. Students will be required to find a local supervisor and submit a research proposal upon applying in order for the application to be referred for consideration. This Master of Science Course, which is mainly by Research, will allow candidates to specialize in their chosen area of studies. The core subjects of the course are Research Methods, Statistics and Research Practicals. The taught study-units will provide an introduction to Research Methods in the Health sphere with essentials of Health information, epidemiology, qualitative research methods and ethical concerns in Research. Students will also be provided with basic knowledge and skills for statistical input in Health Research. Basic Skills are also elaborated in practical sessions.
