Enabling Industry 4.0 by fast and accurate CT metrology

This research project is carried out under the "xCTing project" framework. The abbreviation stands for "Enabling X-ray CT based industry 4.0 process chains by training next generation research experts". It is funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), Innovative Training Networks (ITN), under grant agreement No. 956172 | Research topic: metrological traceability, fast CT and Industry 4.0 | This research project considers the development of methods for fast and autonomous in-scanning characterization, verification and condition monitoring of in-line CT systems, as well as of the systems main components, focused on providing optimal use of the data generated during fast CT scanning. This includes real-time geometrical error estimation, X-ray spectrum and focal spot analysis, detector efficiency and scatter estimation.

This study investigates individual sources of measurement deviations associated with physical effects in X-ray computed tomography (XCT) imaging, including focal spot blur effect, detector modulation transfer function, Poisson-Gaussian noise, and virtual gain correction. The findings have shown potential to guide future efforts in improving measurement accuracy, estimating measurement uncertainty, and developing more realistic simulation tools for XCT metrology.
