Right after the publication of the “A Clean Planet for all” communication and just ahead of the Climate Conference COP24, to leverage the important topic of Climate Action among the public and the media, European Commission (Directorate-General for Communication) is calling on users to pledge their support towards a zero-carbon future by raising their cup for COP. The public is invited to take a photo in the days leading up and to and during COP24 toasting with a reusable cup, replacing a traditional single use cup.
1. To participate:
- take a picture of themselves toasting with a reusable cup,
- post/tweet it with the #EUandME and #COP24 hashtags on your public Instagram, Facebook or Twitter profile,
- tag the European Commission profile in your post/tweet.
The competition is running for a total of 24 days, it will start on 30 November 2018, 12.00 CET and will end on 21 December 2018, 12.00 (noon) CET. In total there will be 20 winners:
- every week on Friday (except on 30 November 2018), we will announce the 5 winners based on the number of engagements/retweets the post received until that Friday at 12.00 (noon) CET;
- at the end of the third and final week, we will pick 5 more winners based on creativity, originality, expression and relevance to the topic.
The 20 winners will receive each one a reusable cup, 100% compostable and Made in the EU.
The winners will be contacted directly on Twitter or Instagram or Facebook and will be asked to accept the terms and conditions of the competition and confirm they fulfil eligibility criteria. Once their approval is given, winners will be asked to share their info (name, an address in the EU, email and number) so we could send the prize to them.
Winners will have 5 working days to claim their prize: agree with the terms and conditions, submit proof of eligibility and share contact details. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
3. Eligibility Criteria
- Agree with the terms and conditions within the given deadline,
- Be a legal resident of one of the EU member States,
- Be at least 18 years old as of 3 December 2018.
By participating you agree with these terms and conditions, and confirm you comply with the eligibility criteria. Participants/ winners might be asked to show proof of their residency. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the competition.
Be original. You confirm you are the sole author and owner of the copyright to the photo submitted.
Ask permission. In addition to owning the copyright, you declare that you have complied with all relevant laws (copyright, privacy rights etc.) in producing your photo and that you have obtained all necessary permissions. Bear in mind that this might include third party works (such as architectural designs, sculptures, photographs or trademarks) or image rights (if your photo depicts identifiable persons).
Pay attention. Don't take images of private persons without their consent. No children should be recognisable in the photo.
Stay safe. Don't be offensive. Do not put yourself or others in danger when making your entry.
Share with us. By submitting your entry, you grant the European Commission a non-exclusive, sublicensable, royalty-free, perpetual, world-wide licence to use the entry. You grant in particular the right to store, modify, publish, broadcast, communicate to the public on internet and social media and create new works with your entry, in any format, medium and language.
Don't over-edit. Photographs must not contain extensive editing. Basic cropping, colour correction and retouching are acceptable. Special effects, computer-generated images and other heavy modifications should be avoided.
The names of the participants (winners included) may be published with the photos when communicated to public (for example when published on social media).
4. Data protection
This competition is being organized by the contractor Kommitment, a consortium formed by Mostra SA, 17 Avenue Marnix, 1000 Brussels, (the Data Processor) on behalf of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communication, Unit A1 (the Data Controller). Kommitment is bound by a specific contractual clause for any processing operations of personal data on behalf of the Commission and by the confidentiality obligations in the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679).
All personal information gathered during competition, if any, (name, nationality, birthdate, postal address, email address, phone number, social media accounts) will be held by the Data Controller, the Data Processor or their trusted representatives and will only be used for the purpose of this competition. Your data will not by shared with third parties. The data will be held until 31/03/2019 and will then automatically be deleted.
The European Commission is committed to personal data protection. Any personal data is processed in line with the Regulation (EC)45/2001. All personal information processed by the Directorate-General for Communication or its contractors is treated accordingly.

Participants/ Winners who do not agree with the terms and conditions or with processing of their personal data or will automatically be disqualified, since we cannot save your entry and cannot include you in the list of entrants/ winners without agreement on the above terms and conditions of the competition.
