On 6 and 7 December, heritage professionals and policy makers will meet in Vienna to close the programme of the year. The #EuropeForCulture event will include discussions of past activities, but it will mainly look forward to strategies for cementing the year's achievements.

After 12 months and over 11,700 events involving 6.2 million people, the European Year of Cultural Heritage is reaching its conclusion. The European Year of Cultural Heritage has successfully raised public awareness, disseminated examples of good practice, and promoted policy debate, research and innovation on cultural heritage.

Now that the year is coming to a close, this conference will highlight projects, e.g. the "Amphora project", innovative methods of cultural education and promising partnerships for cultural heritage. Discussions of policy developments will take place along with illustrations of success stories and future challenges.

Focus on legacy

The main focus of the event will be on the legacy of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, and specifically the question what will remain of this initiative after 2018 ends.

Participants will put forward ideas for establishing ongoing commitments to the aims of the year, and will forge synergies for realising the future cultural policies of the European Union. Special attention will be given to the potential of Europe's younger generations for safeguarding heritage, to the connections between heritage and sustainable environments, and to the natural and man-made challenges our heritage faces.

The event is organised by the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in collaboration with the European Commission. It takes place in the Austria Centre in Vienna, and will feature important highlights such as the eTwinning awards for cultural heritage ceremony, and the launch of the Cultural Gems app.

On 6 December, the conference will include a showcasing of European projects in the form of a “Walking Conference” in the City Centre of Vienna. A cultural policy discussion in the Austria Center Vienna will take place on 7 December.

A separate registration process is necessary for attending the events on 6 and 7 December:
