Climate change, environmental degradation and migration – An EU Strategy on adaptation to climate change

"Environmental factors have always acted as a driver of human mobility. However, with emerging awareness of the rate and magnitude on climate change, interest in the question of how environmental change is likely to affect population movements in the future has grown significantly over the last decade."

The European Commission has recently released a document on the inter-linkages between migration, environmental degradation and climate change. The analysis focuses on human mobility due to climate related disasters as well as environmental degradation, including land degradation, drought and rising sea level caused by climate change. It further provides an overview of the major European and international initiatives taken in the field of environmental change and migration.
