| The theme for this year's Earth Day — Trees for the Earth — holds significance for people and species in the biodiversity hotspots. With only 2 percent of its original forest cover remaining, Haiti provides a prime example of the consequences of not protecting forests: soil degradation, erosion, flooding, increased pressure on wildlife, and more.
