Speaker Corner: how do you give a voice to informal workers?

The IESF Group presents during the next European Development Days (EDDs) a book on social protection for workers in the informal economy. It is the result of discussions and debates between researchers, practitioners, representatives of public institutions and activists during a 5-day workshop in Kenya.

Bringing together these participants coming from various planets of the development galaxy raises the question: how do you give a voice to informal workers? How do you speak in their name? How do you make them heard?

You are a researcher, an activist, an official? Give us your opinion!

Here are two videos of Chandan Kumar, program manager and activist at ActionAid and Pierre Ghilain, program officer at DEVCO, shot during their participation to the workshop.

Very eloquent, Chandan Kumar. You made important points about the importance of coming together to help improve the quality of social protection for people who depend on the informal economy.

The issues that Pierre Ghilain raised are also very to the point, particularly how all countries need to learn from each other's experiences, develop and implement laws and regulations.
