From 9 to 11 May 2010, GLL Hannover (Agency for Geoinformation, Land
Development and Real Estate) with support from GTZ is organising an
International Land Management Symposium in Hannover. The Conference will look
at best practice and regional solutions in urban-rural interrelationships.

The key topics include:

* The challenges of rural-urban relationships, such as the management of
peri-urban areas, migration, secure access to natural resources and the
development of sound integrated development approaches
* The institutional and legal framework, looking in particular at the way
land management strategies can help address the challenges
* Current approaches and solutions in the fields of surveying and geospatial
information, real estate cadastre, valuation of fixed assets, land
consolidation, promotion of agriculture and land development trends
* Exchange and discussion of key land management issues at international

About 150 experts from German and foreign land management administrative
bodies, universities, development cooperation and other professionals
interested in the area of land management are expected to participate in the
Conference, under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony,
Christian Wulff.

The EC is currently organising a regional seminar on Health and Education for
staff working in EU Delegations in Africa and in Headquarters. The seminar
will take place in Brussels from September 3 to 7, 2012 and will focus on
providing practical and targeted support to address the following key
question: *How can the EU better carry out sector analysis and dialogue in
Education and Health? *

On the basis of a participatory dialogue, the seminar will provide background
and guidelines to support DEVCO/EEAS staff currently working or planning to
work in the education and health sectors in Africa on a number of critical
issues currently being discussed in sector dialogue in Education and Health.

This seminar is part of the Commission's training provision for its staff to
update their knowledge, capacities and skills in development cooperation in
Education and Health. Further details and registration for EC/EEAS staff are

Relevant material from the training course will become available to the wider
public through our Education and Development Group at Capacity for

The objectives of the seminar were:

·To promote understanding of the socio-economic dimension of culture and its
potential for employment, wealth creation and the fight against poverty

·Have a better understanding of the potential of culture as an element of
support for development programs in human rights, democracy, reconciliation
and conflict resolution

·Have a better understanding of the differences between the use of culture
in development and cultural diplomacy

The content of the seminar included:

·a theoretical framework and definitions, developed by consultants Raymond
Weber and Francisco D’Almeida, from the firm "Culture and Development",

·introduction to agenda for change, analysis of best practices and
successful projects linking culture to human rights, democracy and poverty
reduction, presentation of brochure “Culture and development, actions and
impact", edited by DEVCO D4 in 2011

·presentations and Q&A with guest speakers: Karim El Hakim, director of the
documentary "1/2 Revolution" and Eleonora Insalaco and Ehaymaa Ramzy from the
Ana Lindh Foundation,

·onsite visits to projects managed by the EU Delegation in Egypt: "Rising
Stars", and "Nubre – Enhancing contemporary design in Upper Egypt"

·and the opening of the exhibition "Art at Work: Visionary Africa".

With focal areas of large scale land acquisition, land governance, and
research and capacity building, and with support from many of our partners,
we put together a diverse and we hope stimulating program. It is our hope
that this will provide the basis for an interesting event that will
consolidate ongoing work on these topics and provide the basis for
collaborative efforts that will allow us to better address the challenges of
the 21st century in terms of food security, climate change, and urbanization.
