A new e-brochure from the European Commission showcasing its efforts to speed up the progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) illustrates how millions of the world’s neediest people are already benefiting from EU help.
As the crucial role of bees as pollinators of the world’s food supply is increasingly becoming common knowledge, reports about the serious decline of honeybee populations in Europe and the USA have alarmed governments, the private sector and the general public. A similar decline in Africa and Asia has the potential to further threaten the world’s biodiversity, in addition to compromising the food security and livelihoods of millions of rural resource-poor farmers, as well as having negative impacts on the agricultural income of commercial farmers.
For almost two decades, a collapsed government and battling warlords have made Somalia a byword for anarchy.
Benin, Bhutan and Costa Rica have come together under a programme of South-South cooperation, sharing skills and knowledge on agriculture, environmental issues and much more, using funds from the Netherlands.
A second update of the European Union’s Plan of Action for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Development 2010-2015 was presented to the European Council in December, and shows that while progress has been made, important challenges persist. Workers in the African informal economy are generally not covered by adequate social protection.  Existing social insurance mechanisms are generally not adapted to the structure of the labour force and access to social assistance programmes is limited. This makes informal workers a very vulnerable and sizable proportion of the African population.

Capacity4dev caught up with Elodie Valette, Geographer at the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), to talk about how the work they do applies geographic principles to localised development projects.

Namibia is often held up as Africa’s poster child for progress in education. But while the sector has been well funded for over twenty years and attendance rates meet the requirements of the Millennium Development Goals, learning achievements remain poor.
