This 3 day seminar is tailored for 35-40 participants from EU delegations,
headquarters as well as representatives of donor organisations (EIB, OECD,
WB/WSP, IRC, bilateral donors and others) as well representatives of partner

deeper understanding of the current challenges in water supply and
sanitation.

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank are jointly
organizing a seminar on the water and sanitation sector which will take place
in Brussels from the 5th to the 7th of July, 2010. This 3 day seminar is
tailored for 35-40 participants from EU delegations, EC and EIB headquarters
as well as representatives of donors and partner countries. The objective of
the seminar is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the
current challenges in water supply and sanitation by promoting the exchange
of experience and debate among donors.

The seminar was hold in Nairobi from 18 to 21 October, 2010.

In total, some 28 people participated representing European Investment Bank,
the European Union delegations of Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Congo,
Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Somalia, Swaziland ; Directorate General
Development; Europe Aid Cooperation Office (AIDCO); Plan Kenya, Ecotac,
Kenya; Ministry of Water and Irrigation (Water Services Regulatory Board,
Water Services Trust Fund), Kenya and national delegations from Lesotho,
Namibia and Rwanda.

The 4 day seminar was divided into 3 parts: Day 1 : Supporting the water
sector when it is not a focal sector and field visit; Day 2: Basic sanitation
– demand – supply – enabling environment; Day 3: Institutional context
and sector budget support; Day 4: Finance and procedures Six topics were
selected against which there was a focus on three cross cutting themes
supported by pre-seminar questionnaires: Capacity building; decentralisation
and, indicators and results based management.

The Seminar is organised as the annual Multistakeholder Forum of the EU Water
Initiative (EUWI), and constitutes a contribution to the 2016 'EU Year of
Development'. The Seminar will present and discuss the new initiatives being
launched and developed in the different partnerships established in the EUWI
framework, enhancing the role of water as a driver for sustainable
development.
