*About the Brussels Briefings*

The ACP-EU technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA [1]),
the European Commission [2], the EU Presidency, the ACP Group [3],Concord
[4], and other partners organize *regular development Briefing sessions in
Brussels on key issues and challenges for rural development in the context of
EU/ACP cooperation*.
The*target group*of such Briefings is the wider ‘development’ community
in Brussels (EC services, European Parliament, NGOs and networks, ACP group,
EU Member States representatives…).

*Objectives of the Briefing on Resilience and Agribusiness in SIDS*

To improve information sharing and promote networking, the CTA, DG DEVCO from
the European Commission, the ACP Secretariat, and Concord organise bimonthly
briefings on key issues and challenges for rural development in the context
of EU/ACP cooperation. The Briefing on 11th July 2014 will address issues
related to vulnerabilities and opportunities for ACP small island economies.
It will: (i) raise awareness on economic challenges in SIDS; (ii) increase
exchange of information and expertise on economic and trade resilience of
SIDS; (iii) capture key messages from the Briefing for the upcoming SIDS
Conference in Samoa; and (iv) facilitate networking amongst development

To improve information sharing and promote networking, CTA, the DG DEVCO from
the European Commission, the ACP Secretariat, Concord organize bimonthly
briefings on key issues and challenges for rural development in the context
of ACP-EU cooperation. The Briefing on 27 September 2012 will be organized in
collaboration with the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture
and Food Security (CCAFS). It will address issues related agriculture and
food security in a changing climate and how agriculture can increase
resilience to climate change effects. In particular, it will: (i) raise
awareness in ACP countries on the key challenges posed to agriculture by
climate changes; (ii) increase exchange of information and expertise on
strategies to develop climate-smart agriculture and proven successes; and
(iii) facilitate networking among development partners.

Input and comments before, during and after the meetings will be included in
the Briefings blog: [1]. Registration is also
possible on the blog. A short report and a Reader in printed and electronic
format will be produced shortly after the meeting.

The 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD) is organized by the CBD Secretariat. The High
Level Segment will be held from 17-19 October 2012. The provisional agenda
includes consideration of: the status of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to
Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits arising from
their Utilization; implementation of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and
progress towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets; issues related to financial
resources and the financial mechanism; issues related to cooperation,
outreach and the UN Decade on Biodiversity; operations of the Convention;
Article 8(j) and related provisions; in-depth review of the programme of work
on island biodiversity; ways and means to support ecosystem restoration;
marine and coastal biodiversity; biodiversity and climate change; other
substantive issues arising from COP 10 decisions, including dryland, forest,
inland waters, mountain, and agricultural biodiversity, protected areas,
sustainable use of biodiversity, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation,
biofuels and biodiversity, invasive alien species, the Global Taxonomy
Initiative, incentive measures, and biodiversity and development; as well as
administrative and budgetary matters.

held in the Caribbean region since 2008. Organized by the Caribbean Community

Access through Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency". A special focus of
the event will be on geothermal energy.
