At the European Development Days, several leading development and youth organisations came together to organise a session on Young Voices for Inclusive Governance. The panel included two young people, Luciano from Brazil and Jennifer from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who in this Voices & Views have shared their thoughts on why listening to the voice of today’s youth is important.
The European Union’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) initiative calls on the involvement of civil society in the negotiation and implementation of their Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPA) with timber exporting countries. But while getting a voice at the negotiating table is one thing, being able to contribute meaningfully during the full VPA process is another.
The eco-village concept provides a community-led and owned model for green development, promoting food security, resilience and the ability to adapt to climate change. In a short period of time, EU-funded eco-village activities in Tanzania have shown strong results - for example, providing inspiration and support to more than 20,000 people on the island of Pemba, as they adapt to the changing environment.  
Extremely vulnerable to climate change, the Pacific islands are receiving support on resilience and disaster preparedness from the EU. Ambassador Andrew Jacobs discusses renewable energy projects, capacity building at government level and resilience at community level, as well as EU collaboration with other donors and the challenges of regional integration.
The Larger than Tigers report, released by the European Commission in May, presents a synthesis of the challenges facing biodiversity across Asia. Lead author Pete Wood walked us through the report’s main findings.

One of the great challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals will be finding ways of lifting populations out of poverty, which is often associated with increased consumption and production, while at the same time dealing with emissions and meeting environmental targets. The question is how to create economic value which also benefits society. Smart technologies, sustainable business models and circular economy solutions are already being developed, but experts say they need to be scaled up, and fast.
DEVCO is supporting work at the intersection of environment, economy and business in its partner countries to avoid the polluting pathway of many industrialised countries and develop green businesses from the outset. It means working at many levels – training entrepreneurs, sharing best practices, effecting large-scale policy change and mobilizing investment.
