A nation’s cultural heritage is part and parcel of understanding a country and its people, according to Webber Ndoro Director of the African World Heritage Fund, who believes many development projects have suffered from lack of cultural awareness and understanding.
The European Commission supports a variety of cultural projects as it believes that investment in the arts, whether cinema, theatre, visual art, music or dance, can contribute positively to achieving economic and social development objectives.

To strengthen local governments across Africa, donors would be advised to spend more time and resources in researching and understanding local systems, according to Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi a key expert from the region. Mr Mbassi, from Cameroon, is a well known expert in decentralisation and has worked for years to promote decentralisation and local governance in Africa. He is currently the Secretary General of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, a gathering of 15,000 local authorities from the continent.
The world passed a collective milestone in October when the planet’s human population topped 7 billion drawing some development professionals to consider the impact of such a large, and in the developing world, increasingly youthful population.
