There is much discussion in the development arena about the struggle ahead to feed the seven plus billion, of the methods proposed towards food security, building resilience, safeguarding water resources and so on. The European Union’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) initiative calls on the involvement of civil society in the negotiation and implementation of their Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPA) with timber exporting countries. The eco-village concept provides a community-led and owned model for green development, promoting food security, resilience and the ability to adapt to climate change. In a short period of time, EU-funded eco-village activities in Tanzania have shown strong results - for example, providing inspiration and support to more than 20,000 people on the island of Pemba, as they adapt to the changing environment.
As the crucial role of bees as pollinators of the world’s food supply is increasingly becoming common knowledge, reports about the serious decline of honeybee populations in Europe and the USA have alarmed governments, the private sector and the general public. However, Ms Goodall is also a UN Messenger of Peace and according to her website she spends over 300 days a year on the road. “The future of food security on the current trajectory is a road to nowhere, and to repeat the statistics that we need to grow 50-70% more food without answering the questions, on what land, with which water and with what kind of seed diversity, is a discussion that merits much greater attention,” said Achim Steiner, the United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director recently in Brussels.
By training informal workers in the waste management industry, the SNV Netherlands Development Organisation is helping to formalise waste management economy in Mali, and to generate incomes.
FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade) Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) are bilateral trade agreements between the European Union (EU) and partner countries aimed at guaranteeing that wood exported to the EU is from legal sources, and at supporting countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America in order to combat illegal logging and improve the governance of their forests.
The Irish Presidency of the European Union is well underway, with an ambitious development programme and a notable focus on hunger, nutrition and resilience. Gay Mitchell MEP, and Ireland’s Minister for Trade and Development, Joe Costello, gathered development stakeholders together last month to celebrate a remarkable agricultural coalition combating hunger in Sub-Saharan Africa – an Ethiopia-based food security project, centered on the potato.
