The role of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in tackling undernutrition has been on development and humanitarian professionals’ radar for more than two decades. Yet fully multi-sectoral approaches remain rare, despite undernutrition contributing to 860,000 preventable deaths a year in girls and boys under five. Ahead of World Toilet Day, marked each 19 November, experts and practitioners discuss how to turn this around by linking nutrition and WASH policies and implementation and overcoming barriers between sectors.
By 2050, the world’s farmers will have two billion more mouths to feed. Significant improvements to agricultural productivity are needed - particularly on the small farms of less than two hectares which produce nearly 70% of the world’s food. Supporting and promoting these smallholder farmers is increasingly urgent.
Securing nutritious food for the world’s growing population is essential to ensure health and quality of life. But beyond that, it can be a driver for development. It creates rural employment, which can reduce migration. It boosts education through better school attendance and concentration, which develops human capital and helps break the cycle of poverty. In addition, sustainable agriculture methods can combat climate change. Everything begins with food, and achieving these goals will require cooperation between governments, local authorities and private sector organisations.

During the European Development Days 2013, there was a strong focus on youth, as the event welcomed for the first time 12 youth ambassadors from around the world, three of whom were 18 or under. Each ambassador was selected to attend a high-level auditorium session where they were encouraged to join the debate by asking questions and sharing their thoughts. To launch Youth Week, two ambassadors, Esther Eshiet and Restanti Waruwu, share their views with capacity4dev.eu on health and nutrition, and how these should be addressed in the post-2015 agenda.

As the crucial role of bees as pollinators of the world’s food supply is increasingly becoming common knowledge, reports about the serious decline of honeybee populations in Europe and the USA have alarmed governments, the private sector and the general public. A similar decline in Africa and Asia has the potential to further threaten the world’s biodiversity, in addition to compromising the food security and livelihoods of millions of rural resource-poor farmers, as well as having negative impacts on the agricultural income of commercial farmers.
