Water as a human right: working towards implementation with all partners
A successful water sector involves its users. It fosters active and empowered people and communities able to claim their rights to water and sanitation, in particular at local level. Yet, in many countries, efforts to improve WASH services or to implement integrated water resources management and to protect water-related ecosystems, are held back by poor governance and infrastructure. To reach SDG 6 targets by 2030, a strong political decision-making framework needs to be in place to turn policies into real change, to give people the right to water. Power imbalances and cultural barriers affecting e.g. women or people with disabilities must be tackled.
The session on Water as a human right: working towards implementation with all partners that will take place at the 'Water and Beyond' event, will help to explore how governance can facilitate universal and sustainable access to water. Speakers will highlight the role of legal and political frameworks including the EU guidelines on the human rights to water and sanitation that must be adopted so that interventions in the water and sanitation sector are well coordinated, and implemented on a large scale reaching the most marginalised.
