Belarus is vulnerable to disasters due to both natural and man-made hazards. The major natural hazards are floods, storms, extreme temperatures, forest fires and epidemic. Spring floods are quite common in Belarus, occurring almost every year. They result in strong economic losses. Fires (both natural and manmade) are affecting the everyday life in the Republic of Belarus and remain very difficult to manage. In the last years ca 9000 fires were recorded., causing immense economic damage and the loss of 1.100 lives.
The key man made, technological hazards are related mainly to nuclear accident contamination (after the Chernobyl disaster) but are also related to oil/gas pipelines, transport and industrial accidents.
