Today the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA) released its annual report, The State of the World’s Mangroves 2022(link is external), a compilation of the most current information available on what we know about mangrove forests and what’s being done to reverse the downward trends impacting the coastal trees and the local communities who depend on them.
We now have access to more extensive and reliable knowledge via data updates to Global Mangrove Watch(link is external) maps–the evidence base informing the Global Mangrove Alliance–that brings coverage from 2016 up to 2020. With this new insight, we can now say that there are 147,000km2 of mangroves remaining worldwide, an area about the size of Bangladesh.
Have a look at the report and get in touch for more info

Don’t miss our session on “the Lithium Triangle in Latin America and high Andean wetlands” on 21 June at 17.35 pm (studio 4). We will seek to reply to the following question: How to ensure fair investments towards a just, clean, green energy transition including protecting key ecosystems and people relying on them?
The EU Global Gateway is about green and clean recovery strategy, but also mobilising investments for a transformational impact. Our session will focus on lithium, ecosystems and communities. Lithium is an important raw material for clean energy, but extractive technologies can destroy ecosystems like wetlands, its biodiversity and its communities whose existence is strictly linked to them. It is fundamental to discuss a new development paradigm which is possible through a combination of environmentally committed businesses, a State that takes an active role, and an involved civil society..
We’re looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday 21 June at 5.35pm
