The Gender Equality Toolbox: A new resource on gender integration from Gates Foundation
New externally available resource: The Gates Gender Equality Toolbox website.
This website is made up of tools designed to guide foundation staff and partners in designing, managing and measuring the results and impact of gender intentional and gender transformative programs and investments.
Included in the website are the following:
- Gender Equality Lexicon: A concise set of clearly defined gender concepts. This lexicon helps to ensure staff benefit from the use of a common language
- Gender Mainstreaming Primer: Key concepts, the motivations for and lessons learned from gender mainstreaming efforts, and the foundation’s approach to transform into a gender-intentional institution
- Gender Integration grantmaking tools, inclusive of:
- Gender integration guide: Highlights key questions and hints that might help increase the integration of gender during investment design
- Gender integration criteria: Descriptions of the conditions that categorize investments along a gender intentional continuum (gender unintentional, intentional, transformative)
- Gender integration marker: A tool to assess the level of gender intentionality in an investment during the design phase
- Guidance on measuring empowerment, inclusive of:
- An interactive and electronic methods note to measuring empowerment (pdf also available), to complement the foundation’s conceptual model of empowerment
- Sector resources, including a number of case studies and evidence review on Gender and Water Sanitation & Hygiene (WSH) – with more sector resources coming.
