Etiosa Uyigue

I work for the Community Research and Development Centre as the Executive Director. I hold a Masters Degree in Zoology from the University of Benin. Several of my works and researches have centred around climate change, renewable energy and energy efficiency. In these areas, I have made several publications and presented papers in different parts of Nigeria and the world. I also work with the UNDP Nigeria Country Office on a GEF funded project to improve the energy efficiency of end-use appliances in residential and public buildings in Nigeria.

I am a member of several local and international organizations among are the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), Citizens United for Renewable Energy and Sustainability (CURES), Council for Renewable Energy of Nigeria (CREN), Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Network (REEEN), Nigeria Climate Action Network etc.

We are are currently promoting the use of renewable energy technologies and promoting energy efficiency in Nigeria. So far we have embarked on the following:

In 2006, CREDC organized a conference in Benin City, southern Nigeria to create awareness on renewable energy and energy efficiency and their potential for sustainable development. The conference helped to build capacity in stakeholders to advocate for renewable energy and energy efficiency. The conference attracted stakeholders from the south-south and south west zones of Nigeria. The full conference report can be downloaded in website www.credcentre.org In 2007, CREDC conducted a research titled “Coping with Climate Change and Environmental Degradation in the Niger Delta of Southern Nigeria” with the objectives to highlight climatic and environmental changes that have occurred in the Niger Delta and elaborate on inherent adaptive strategies that have been adopted by the communities in the region. The report proffered institutional and constitutional solution to combating the threat of climate change in the region. The full report can be downloaded in our website www.credcentre.org In 2007, the CREDC organized a training workshop in Calabar to educate and train stakeholders from the south-east zone of Nigeria. The workshop was organized to increase public awareness on renewable energy and energy efficiency and to train stakeholders to advocate for renewable energy and energy efficiency. The full report can be downloaded in our website www.credcentre.org In 2008, CREDC organized another workshop in Kano City to reach out to stakeholders in northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt. The workshop featured the practical demonstration of renewable energy facilities such as solar system (photovoltaic). It was organized to create awareness on renewable energy and energy efficiency and to build capacity in stakeholders to develop policy to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. The full report can be downloaded in our website www.credcentre.org Still in 2008, CREDC conducted a training to build capacity in NGOs and faith-based organizations to enable them effectively carry out development projects. The fundamental idea behind the training program was to bring representatives from different organizations together to learn about development issues, share their experiences and to be trained to become trainers themselves. The full report can be downloaded in our website www.credcentre.org In 2008, the CREDC convened a national conference to influence policy at the national level that will promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. The outcomes of the conference were the development of a road map to integrate energy efficiency policy into Nigeria’s policy framework and to develop strategies to promote the concept of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies at the institutional, local, state and national levels. The full report can be downloaded in our website www.credcentre.org In 2009, CREDC conducted a research titled “Energy Efficiency Survey in Nigeria: A Guide for Developing Policy and Legislation”. The research was conducted to elicit baseline information that will guide the development of policy and legislation to improve the efficiency of end-use appliance in Nigeria, which will help to bring down energy demand hence helping to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases resulting from energy development. Currently we are working with Odighi Community to increase access to electricity using PVs. 

Our interest is to scale up our rural electrification project using solar PVs.
