Negotiating Mutually Agreed Terms for Access to Genetic Resources: Training course for Caribbean ACP Countries

The purpose of the workshop is to strengthen countries’ capacity to negotiate fair and equitable mutually agreed terms (MAT) for access to genetic resources and the sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of the workshop. The workshop will:

  • enable environmental officers, legal officers and other key stakeholders to understand the MAT provisions of the Nagoya Protocol and the role of MAT in access and benefit sharing;
  • provide participants with information on the key components of clear, fair and equitable MAT agreements;
  • present and explore options for the development of rules and procedures for establishing and requiring MAT;
  • introduce participants to the technical and legal aspects of MAT negotiations;
  • develop participants’ skills in the conduct of MAT negotiations.
