In 1997, Belgian engineer Bart Weetjens founded APOPO, an NGO that trains African giant pouched rats to detect landmines and tuberculosis.

APOPO is a social enterprise that, according to his founder, has several advantages over traditional and institution-driven development assistance.

A few weeks ago, the Capacity4dev sat down with Bart and asked a few questions to better understand how APOPO works and what makes it so successful at saving human lives while being highly efficient and cost-effective.
