The European Water Initiative is strongly linked to two facilities that provide funds to Water and Sanitation projects in ACP countries (Africa Caribbean and Pacific): the African Water Facility and the European Water Facility.

The African Water Facility

1419349642_african_water_facility.pngThe African Water Facility (AWF) is an initiative led by the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) to mobilize resources to finance water resources development activities in Africa.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) hosts the Facility on the request of AMCOW.

AWF applies fast-approval and flexible procedures and can provide support to communities as well as to national and multinational institutions.

The European Union Water Facility

To support the EU Water Initiative (EUWI), the European Union (EU) in 2004 launched a 500 million euro Water Facility for the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries under the 9th European Development Fund (EDF) – the single biggest EU allocation ever for water and sanitation projects. This Facility, targeting developing countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, aims to boost the sustainable delivery of water and sanitation infrastructure and to improve water governance and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) practices by helping to address the financing gap.

The ACP-EU Water Facility invited proposals from national and local governments, municipalities and civil society organisations for co-financed water and sanitation programmes and projects in ACP countries: they ranged from sector-wide and cross-boundary water strategies, including capacity building and educational programmes on the importance of water, to community projects that ensure the adequate provision of water for drinking and household uses, hygiene and basic sanitation, and the safe disposal of contaminated water.

A new allocation of €200 Million from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) has been allocated to the new Water Facility and two calls for proposals have been published at the beginning of 2010. The ACP-EU Water Facility was set up in 2004, with the principal objective of providing water and basic sanitation to the poor, and to improve water management governance in African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries.

More information on the ACP-EU Water Facility and future funding may be found on EuropeAid's website.
