Global citizenship and education in a developing world

What does 'global citizenship' mean, and who is a 'global citizen'? How can education contribute to global citizenship, and which role does non-formal education, especially adult education, play? At the brainstorming lab "Global citizenship and education in a developing world", we discussed these questions (find the presentations and a summary of the discussion in the PDF) and came up with the following recommendations:

• strengthen civic education and global citizenship education in Europe

• find a common definition for global citizenship education that can be used in formal and non-formal education

• recognize that global citizenship education takes place in non-formal and information learning => validate non-formal and informal (adult) learning

• find new methodologies to implement global citizenship education in learning processes => away from content to methodology discussion; foster empathy and reflection processes

• promote community learning, volunteering etc. as ways to develop global citizenship

• reach out to hard-to-reach groups of society

• connect different actors with each other (civil society, government institutions, education centres, schools,...)

• put education first in all goals for development => education as a transversal goal and not as a separate goal

• engage in real partnerships between the Global North and South
