Project Environment

PROJECT ENVIRONMENT:

ADIP is located in Vila Nova de Poiares’ county, which is one of the seventeen Counties in Coimbra’s district, being part of the North wide region of Pinhal Interior. This county has four parishes: Arrifana, Lavegadas, S. Miguel and Poiares (Santo André).
Geographically speaking, the county has an approximate latitude of 100,4 km2; it is rectangular shaped; and it extends towards the west-east, bordered to the north by Penacova’s county, to the south by Miranda do Corvo and Lousã, to the west by Coimbra and to the east by Arganil and Góis.

The distance between Vila Nova de Poiares and Coimbra is of 27 km, and the main accesses are Estrada da Beira (EN 17) and the IP3 (highway linking Coimbra and Viseu).

According to 2001 Census data, we can notice that the total population number from Vila Nova de Poiares’ County is 7061 individuals: 3402 are male and 3659 are female. The illiteracy rate is 10%, lower than North Pinhal Interior’s rate of 13,1%.

Agriculture is a very important activity to the county’s economy and it is practiced, in its majority, through smallholders, in which the property is divided and sparse.

Forestry activity, whose main species are the pine tree and eucalyptus, has a huge importance as a source of raw materials to the several industrial activities.

Vila Nova de Poiares’ main industries are the branches connected to ceramics, wood and textile industry.

Connections to Coimbra, the district’s capital, are made mainly by bus, and they are daily. To Lousã, a neighboring municipality, there are also bus connections.

In the social level there are other institutions in the county related to this field, including a Continuity Care Unit (Irmandade de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades), an institution for disabled citizens (APPACDM) and a host institution for children and young people in risk (Comunidade Juvenil São Francisco de Assis).

In the cultural level, almost every location of the county has activities where local people come together on weekends to socialize, there are three folk dancers groups who usually participate in national and international gatherings, and there is also the Fraternity Philharmonic from Poiares, which celebrated 136 years of age in 2010. It also exists a cultural center in our county, equipped with a room for film screenings, an ICT and Internet room and a Library.











PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR EVS VOLUNTEERS:

Being ADIP a wide experienced institution in social working, it can provide new knowledge related with young and senior population to young volunteers. Our projects are connected with activities’ promotion within this population, as we can offer some of our experience in these kinds of activities. In this way, ADIP will allow youngsters to have training in a real context which will be, certainly, useful in the future. Besides, as the volunteers come from foreign countries, they will have contact with different cultures, traditions, new knowledge, different behaviours, among other things.

Dealing with these teenagers, ADIP has the opportunity to advertise its services and good practices beyond borders, to get its work recognized and spread. On the other hand, young people will also bring new knowledge to the institution and its users, allowing them the contact with different cultures and realities.

Regarding the activities to be developed by the young volunteers, we offer some of them aiming the promotion of knowledge about their countries, their languages, habits, routines, culture and traditions.

We offer as well the development of free time ateliers, for example, decorative arts, music, theatre, ceramics, sports, among others.

All of these must be prepared to two different publics: 3 to 6 years old children e elderly people. The children are the ones you can find in our kindergarten; the elderly people are the nursing home users, the ones from Day Care and from the Senior University.

Relatively to the several workshops, there are some activities that can be made either with children or with elderly people, such as:

Art Atelier - the creation of dolls, paintings, decorative pieces, flower pots, use of recyclable materials, collection of ancient arts and crafts, drama, poetry, among others;

Gym Atelier - awareness of the importance of physical exercise according to the target population;

Painting Atelier- painting tiles, vases, boxes, frames, etc.;

Music Atelier – to wake up the rhythms of dance and music through dance classes and contact with different musical instruments;

Concerning Portuguese language learning, ADIP has in its staff licensed professionals in the languages’ field, which are empowered to teach the volunteers. Initially the’ll start with four hour classes per week, which will later be adjusted depending on the evolution and needs of volunteers.

As ADIP is a big institution, during SVE, volunteers will be accommodated here. They will share a bedroom with toilette and all meals will be provided by the institution.









VOLUNTEER PROFILES AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

To develop all the activities above, it is important that young volunteers have an entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. They should be dynamic; have some knowledge about the kind of public with which they will develop their volunteer work; they should be responsible, know how to take part; be available, committed to the project ideas, motivated, cooperative; and they should have basic knowledge on the Portuguese language and willingness to learn.

To the recruitment process, we’ll take into account the following itens:
- Basic knowledge on the Portuguese language;
- Team work ability;
- Motivation and interest;
- Experience in that kind of activities;
- Experience with this kind of public.

To develop this project, we would like the sending organization to be an association with characteristics similar to ours, as it will be easier to achieve the specific needs of this kind of target audience and to these kinds of actions.

Candidate selection will be founded on CVs, motivation letters, individual interviews and they’ll have the following deliberations:
- Curriculum Vitae – 20%;
- Motivation letter – 20%;
- Individual Interview – 60%.


The recruitment process will have two steps:
- First step: CV and Motivation letter analysis (to the next step only 5 candidates will continue);
- Second step: interview through video-conference (only permitted to the five candidates who have overcome the first step).

RISK PREVENTION, PROTECTION AND SAFETY:

Young volunteers will always have a specialized team escorting their way through the institution, which will take care of their welfare and their needs. They’ll be given accommodation with proper conditions to their welfare and all the support needed so that their stay at the institution will serve as an advantage to their personal and social training.

ADIP has implemented a Quality Management System, according to the ISO 9001/2000 standard rule, whereby there is an Emergency Plan defined in the Association’s facilities which will be acknowledged by young volunteers as soon as they arrive to the institution. Besides having to guide all the volunteers’ activities and having to help their integration in the institution and in their new place of residence, the tutor also has to give all kinds of information about security issues. Beyond that, all emergency numbers which might be of need are at sight, throughout the whole institution, but they will also be given to the volunteers.

Motivation and EVS experience

The ADIP – Associação de Desenvolvimento Integrado de Poiares is an institution with a 15 years experience on the field, that promotes economic, social and cultural development actions, in the county of Vila Nova de Poiares and surrounding areas, having a vast experience in these areas.
In the social work area, ADIP is divided in two fields: juvenile and senior. In the juvenile field, it has the social responses of day-care center and kindergarten. Also, in the past, the institution used to have a free-time occupation for school children. In the senior field, the social responses are day and recreation centers, nursing homes, home support services and Senior University. The social work area provides support to 200 users.
In the training area, ADIP has a Centro Novas Oportunidades, that provides the opportunity for adult citizens to recognize, validate and certify their competences and knowledge, acquired through lifelong learning experiences, promoting and favoring education and training paths. In this offer, until 2010, 1253 adults, for the elementary school level, 549 of the high-school level and 51 adults for the professional level, have been certified by the Center. ADIP is also accredited as a training unit, in the conception, organization, promotion and development/ execution and other forms of organization domains, promoting courses for diversified publics, betting, in the last few years, in specific training for the business sector, developing, in 2010 alone, 32 vocational training courses.

As for the development, culture and marketing area, ADIP has been developing, in the last few years, cooperation with local companies, in the Marketing and Support Promotion of Micro and Small Enterprises Creation, making available programs and tailored training contents to apply to each sector and audience, also preparing projects that support, organize and define business plans, that will reinforce business location and create cooperation mechanisms based upon the research of new ideas and innovating solutions and, keeping in mind social inclusion, contribute to the promotion, in children and future professionals, an enterprising culture, open to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. It has also potentiated opportunities for self-employment for graduates and developed actions and initiatives that value the intergenerational contact between children and senior citizens.

Another of the interventional areas of ADIP is the Traditional Arts and Crafts department. In this area, the institution has developed activities whose goal is the promotion and awareness of the main public to traditional arts and crafts as a cultural identity marker. In that sense, the institution created several long term training courses, guided tours, exhibitions, educational workshops and participated in several fairs and other events with national broadcast, among other activities.

ADIP has had, locally and regionally, a fundamental role in all its areas of intervention, considering of extreme importance the recognition and broadcast of the work already developed. The application for the European Voluntary Service has, to some extent, the role of recognition and broadcast, that will allow ADIP to present its work and good practices abroad and to provide the volunteers an overall experience in the social services area. For the institutions and its users, it will certainly be an enriching experienced, that will allow the contact with different cultures and realities.

ADIP already has experience in volunteering, at international and national levels. In the international level, we participated in EVS, as we received three volunteers in 2000 and 2001. In the international field as well, ADIP also participated in two international workcamps, with volunteers from different countries: one of them was designed to do mills reconstruction in Serra do Carvalho, the other one was conceived to revitalize ADIP’s holidaycamp.

In the national level, ADIP has a voluntary internal stock, that accepts anyone who is interested in doing voluntary service with our public. At the moment, we have about eight volunteers conducting activities with the senior population from the Senior University and Nursing Home. At the Senior University, they teach subjects according to their knowledges. At the Nursing Home, volunteers conduct monitoring activities and stimulate workshops.

Since ADIP is an IPSS (Private Charitable Organization), it is a non-profit association and its target is the social field; it seeks to encourage voluntary service, thus the creation of voluntary fellowship and motivation to participate in EVS.

Description of the organisation

ADIP is a non-profit organization, created on the 21st February 1996, mainly to promote economical, cultural and social development in and for the local community. After 1997, with the extended activities, it was required of the institution that it guided its initiatives and actions towards social work, a much needed shortage area for local community. In that sense, ADIP made an amendment of its regulations on the 23rd July 1998, as a way of recognition as an IPSS (Private Charitable Organisation) and simultaneously a state legal person, which came to pass in the 7th December 1999.
Thus, the main goals of ADIP are the social work areas, also keeping in mind the other fundamental areas of the development process.

ADIP’s actions are developed in the following vectors: Social Work, Training, Traditional Arts and Crafts, Economy and Development, Sports, Culture and Free Time Activities, and Advertising and Marketing.

The institution’s main goals are: promoting Social solidarity, mainly developing activities of Childhood protection, Youth, Family, Community and Working Population, Senior citizens and the Disabled. Secondarily, it aims: the promotion and development of health care and sports, recreational and cultural activities, social gathering, developing partnerships with private and official organizations; to value local resources and promotion of integrated development, through a network of cultural, social, economical, sportive and civil protection initiatives; the development and promotion of studies and projects, as well as regional and local development, cooperating with public and private organizations and enterprises.
The institution’s mission is “to provide its customers/ users a personalized and quality welcome, allowing access to Education, Training and Personal Welfare, essential to a more humane and joint society”.

Seeking continuous improvement in the quality of services rendered to the community, ADIP started, in 2007, the process of Quality Management System, according to the 9001/2000 ISO norm, receiving the certificate of compliance in the 21st February 2009, on the institution’s 13th birthday.
In conclusion, ADIP is a certified institution in the Development of Social Work with Children and Youngsters, in its day-care center and kindergarten, free-time occupation, and with the senior population, in its day and recreation centers, nursing homes, home support services and Senior University. It also provides training and educational services, with a Centro Novas Oportunidades and Professional Training, also accredited as a training unit, in the conception, organization, promotion and development/ execution and other forms of organization domains.

At the moment, ADIP has 48 employees: 7 of which are providing services; 6 with term contracts; and 35 with permanent contracts. The ones who have contracts work full time in the institution. Regarding the educational attainment: 19 have higher education qualifications, 6 finished high school, 17 completed elementary school level and the remaining 6 have qualifications below this level.
