Yes, we are able to host volunteers with less opportunities, the team of our organisation is able to give support to those volunteers, because we work on the social field at many years and we have the knowledge to adapt the contact to a volunteer with less opportunities. We can’t host volunteers with problems of mobility, our building is not prepared for them and even the apartment that we have for the volunteers.
The organisation has activities in different places, but all of them are able to host volunteers with fewer opportunities. All the places have security system.
We have a psychologist that could give support to the volunteers if they need it and a social worker.
The City of Peniche it's on the west of Portugal with nice beaches and at 90km from the capital, Lisbon. The economy is based on the fishing and tourism. It's close to Òbidos and there is a natural reserve, Berlengas that is a island. The city of Peniche has around 15000 inhabitants; it's a calm and tourist place.
There are connections to the others cities by bus. We have a museum, a library, and on the summer there are some activities outside - concerts, shows. Economically the city lives from the fish and the services that are connected with fisher field or sports of water (surf).
Peniche "is an urban center balanced, offering values and living conditions in satisfactory plan in the context national, regional and municipal. Education and youth issues represent closely related to base their treatment together. Indeed, young people constitute the audience's special education system and this is a structural matrix social arrangements of young people and their paths of life past, present and future.
As weaknesses more evident for the young population of the county are identified as follows:
• Lack of response to the leisure activities in the field of sport, culture and recreation, whether in urban or rural;
• High school dropouts;
• Developments in the growing "youth at risk";
• Lack of response to the level of stimulation, support and monitoring of youth population;
• Difficulty in integrating young people into the labour market.
The difficulty felt with regard to access to housing translates into high demand for social housing by the most vulnerable social sectors, a feature that has been claimed by successive generations. This situation is symptomatic of a cycle intergenerational which has not been possible to break. Peniche has about 14 housing estates that are owned by the City Council.
There are several factors that make these populations vulnerable to exclusion, involving aspects related to housing, the socio-professional, self-esteem, etc. ..
The lack of economic conditions coupled with the overwhelming majority of cases, lack of housing conditions are the main reasons why these households were applying the allocation of social housing.
The vast majority are people with low qualifications, verifying that most did not go beyond the 1st or 2nd cycle of basic education. Some are illiterate and a small portion reached the 3rd cycle, and those few who complete it. In this are almost non-existent universe that reached high school, as well as the university education.
Our organisation has experience in work with volunteers. They were very well integrated in the team of social animators and social workers and can contribute with ideas for the projects of the organisation.
PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR EVS VOLUNTEERS:
We think that the project can grow up with renovated ideas from the youngsters from outside and can do a change in the Portuguese children's and youngsters and even in the team of the organisation. We believe that the children, the staff as well as the volunteer can benefit a lot of this opportunity to meet another European culture at daily-life level. And many young people are interested in the European dimension, and it is a good way of creating a tolerant and understanding atmosphere. The work with children offers many different opportunities of exchange.
The volunteer can learn a lot about the our culture and youth work in Portugal, and show to the children's and youngsters that they are working in the meaning of becoming active in a foreign country, of being flexible and involved In a European society.
It's interested too because the volunteers can give ideas that the organisations of their country are doing, and we want that this project can be the most intercultural possible.
The role of the volunteers on the project will be an active participant that will help in the activities that we developed on the social and cultural field. The volunteer can participate in manifold tasks. S/he can also lend a helping hand in the organisation itself, where as the tasks will depend on the interests and abilities of the volunteer. The volunteer will take part in the organisation of the various cultural events and youth activities that we offer and will be partially in charge of them. The volunteer should work too with children, development of activities for them, etc… The timetable of the organisation it's everyday at 9h30, stopped at 12h30, and it starts at 14h00 until 18h00. The volunteer will do a different one timetable (Monday 11a.m until 13 pm and after from 15 to 19pm the other days 14pm to 19pm) have two free days all the weeks, and S/he will be part of the team of all the project.
Work with the team of the project in many activities with youngsters from 6 to 20 years. We do activities in informatics area, study support, work with the families, skills development and participate in exchanges. Beside the physical location of the project we work inside the Arco Íris social neighborhood everyday with children from 6 to 10 years. And two times for week we go to the rural zone of Peniche, to Bufarda and there the ages are from 6 to 15 years. In the other hand, our association works with people with disabilities and handicaps, in areas like education, welfare, leisure and rehabilitation of youth and adults. This is an area of many interest for the volunteers, because they can learn more about the ways of life.
Volunteers will be invited to take action regarding the implementation of activities planned that contribute to achieve the mission and aims of the project.
Typical activities that the volunteers will be involved may be:
- To prepare, organize and implement an activity;
- To participate in the conceiving and implementation of the a monthly programme of activities for children’s and youngsters;
- To take part in some specific activities of the Development Education projects (the autonomy level will be considered taking into account the capabilities and integration skills of the volunteer);
11h - 13h – Meeting with the team of the project. To discuss the planning activities. To talk about difficulties in the development of the activities. Plannification of future activities, etc...
13h00 - 14h00 - Lunch time.
14h00 - Arrive to the organisation. Start to prepare the activity. Receive the children’s or youngsters. Development of the activity.
16h30 - Free time. 17h00 - Development of the activity, if that will be in the time, or a little bit later, receiving the participants, see if every material is there and if something is necessary to the participants.
In the youth field the volunteer will work in activities for children (70%). Prepare some activities; they will help the leader of the activity. The tasks of the volunteer consist on supervision the children, help them playing games, sports, explain something about informatics, go with them in excursions and be responsible for some kids, develop some workshop's with them, etc.
The volunteers must like to work on a multicultural environment and with children’s and youngsters. The volunteers have the chance to learn from the work developed and understand the social local intervention on the activities for children’s and youngsters. On the meetings of the team, there will be space to learn from eachother and to discuss some situations. During the activities will be a good way to learn Portuguese, on a non formal way and to have a contact with the local community.
The volunteers will stay at an apartment with other volunteers, with kitchen, bathroom and very close to the organisation and project.
The meals will be cooked by the volunteer, they will receive money , each month or each week, for they buy the food by herself.
The accommodation will be in a rent house/apartment in Peniche, that will have individual room for each volunteer, WC with all the conditions, living room, and a Kitchen where they can cook. They have to share the apartment with other volunteers.
The volunteer will have 2 hours for a week with a teacher, with the others volunteers. We will give them some books to help the voluntary and help them in the learning of a new language.
VOLUNTEER PROFILES AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

Consider further information about the type of Sending Organisation you want to cooperate with. This information can help the matchmaking between volunteer candidates, Sending Organisations and your organisation.
The volunteers should be dynamic and active, it's important that are a communicative person for better adaptation into our work. The volunteer should be really interested in working with children and youngsters. Communicative and creative skills would be an advantage. Have responsibility.
The work with children and youngsters implies flexibility and mobility and the ability to keep one's nerve.
Project expects from the volunteer desire to be active and to take initiatives. It is important that volunteer is motivated and interested in working with children and youngsters. Some previous experience in work with children in general is an advantage, but not necessary. Volunteer is expected to be sociable, positive, energetic, creative, friendly and helpful. He/she has to be able to work both in the team and on his/her own.
We are open to work with any organisation of Europe, it's important to be open.
The EVS placement will be informed on 3 manners: firstly throught the database of the EVS projects, secondly through our web page and thirdly by e-mail to our partners organisations in Europe. In that case we are working with organisation’s that have already experience with the EVS short term and can do a transparency selection of the volunteers.
For us it’s important to give the chance to different volunteers to participate in this project, then we will selected them by their motivation to work with children, the contact and speaking with the sending organisation will also be very important in the decision process, etc… We will adapt the project to the skills and abilities of each volunteer, the project is easier to adapt to any volunteer. The volunteer should be someone that would like to work with children’s and youngsters, this is the most important things requested.
The volunteer don’t substitute any job, because the organisation has 3 animators for working with the children’s or youngsters. The volunteer will help in the tasks or developed some activities, if they want to do it.
NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS HOSTED:
We host maximum 4 volunteers.
RISK PREVENTION, PROTECTION AND SAFETY:
The hosting organization has all the conditions of safety and protection and the staff has a special formation on this field. The volunteers will also have a person on the organization that will be responsible for them.
Furthermore, we will give the volunteers all the contacts that they might need (police, fire-fighters, hospital,…) and show where they are located.
In any risk prevention and crisis management we:
- Involve all actors in identifying ways of dealing with the conflict.
- Developed guided discussions about the situation.
- Look for a solutions that may resolve the problem without “recreating” the conflict.
The volunteer will have a mentor that are always in contact with the volunteer and try to help in any risk prevention or crisis management.
In any situation that could be a conflict with the mentor, we will provide another one, to substitution.
In any crisis management the both organisations will be in contact to find a solution that will be the best for the volunteer.
All the documentation concerning with youth in action programme in general and EVS in Particular will be also provide by us.
The tutor will be responsible to:
Supervise and guide the volunteer.
Help in any risk prevention or crisis management.
Provide personal support and support during the learning integrate the volunteer into the community promoting contacts with other EVS volunteers, if possible.
Make sure the volunteer participate in the evaluation process identify learning opportunities for the volunteer.
ADEPE has been in contact with European Voluntary Service since 2007 by collaborating in many activities with Associação Juvenil de Peniche. We already worked with 4 long term and 1short terms volunteers. During the last 4 years we learn a lot and try to develop a good work in this field, we think that we do it, because almost all the volunteers that work with us made a good evaluation.
Our motivation to be coordinators is because of all the experience that we get from the past, on working with volunteers, in collaboration with Associação Juvenil de Peniche. We want to improve our good practises in the EVS. Another important fact is that we know different kinds of institutions in Peniche and around cities, that comes to us and are interested on the EVS and they know that we have this experience at a long time, and then they prefer that we developed the support work for the EVS in their organisations. In the city there’s a good partnership between social organisations.
We are aware of what the hosting organisation’s needed it and have the experience of four years to help in any situation that could happen to solve problems. We want to do meetings each three weeks, to know how is going the things and what kind of problems they are feeling
Our motivation to be a sending/hosting and coordinator organisation is the fact to give the opportunity to the youngsters of our area to participate on the EVS. We have experience already as a partner of the organisation that host the volunteers. This is a chance to work with the youngsters and develop with them some social skills and try that with this tool they “grow up” a little bit more on a European environment.
We know exactly how important it is to prepare a volunteer to be on a the hosting organisation, and be well prepared for the role that he/she will have on the project, and a strongest articulation will be done for the volunteer will be prepared to develop a good work in all the cycle: project, environment, the relations out side of the project and to manage some feelings of the distance. This articulation will be done by phone, e-mail and fax.
In our city we have many youngsters that are early school leavers and have some social problems (economically and social) we would like to be like a “open door” for those kind of youngsters and work with them their own development as a citizens, and through the EVS short term, give them the opportunity to develop more skills.
The fact that we can host volunteers, is that we want to involve those EVS volunteers preparing the future new volunteers to learn how to be a volunteer in a different country, the difficulties, the opportunities, and the knowledge that a volunteer can get it during this experience.
The team of our organisation is very open and youngster, we have 4 youth workers that already have many experience in the integration of the youngsters on the projects. The responsible/mentor of the EVS is Ana Cavaco that have the sensibility to help the volunteers in their personal or project problems.
On another level we are prepared to activate our partnerships to support any difficulty or healthy problems that could happen during the project and even a teacher of Portuguese that are always able to help in the introduction of our mother language. The fact that we have knowledge on the field of the EVS, and a structure already prepared to develop a good work, we think that we have all the conditions to do a good coordination, hosting and sending work.
The ADEPE - Association for the Development of Peniche, founded in 1995, is an association to promote local development (non-profit), which seeks to fit all the action in the logic of promoting wellness and quality of the people on the slopes education, training, promotion of employment opportunities and is accredited as a training organization since 1998. In its intervention logic, objectives prevails as to promote activities aimed at developing economic, technical, social and cultural development of its members and the general population, the contribution to the business associations of the county and the region of Peniche, monitoring, coordination, implementation, management and evaluation of the results of implementation of national or community linked to the development and contribution to the promotion of economic activities in the Municipality of Peniche. They point out further activities, encouragement, support and advice to members in investment initiatives, promoting better access to programs and initiatives that relate to their activities.
Adepe currently consists of 49 collective members from many areas ranging from enterprises to private social solidarity institutions, cultural associations and local authorities.
Based on its creation of a promotion of a research study in the area of fisheries, effecting the project "Marham - human resource policies at the line fisheries in scenarios of crisis and change", the ADEPE has a logic integrated work with a very dynamic partnership with the Municipality of Peniche (whose partnership protocol was established in 1999), which confirmed the important role it plays in the ADEPE local development and the intention to cooperate with each other in "studies, projects and plans to develop economic and social council " Thus, the ADEPE has been associated with its areas of intervention studies and projects:
a) in the Fishing - by continually Fisheries Observatory, the study design MARHE and Project ISTMO;
b) in the Social and Voluntary realizing local studies within the Social Forum in Peniche;
c) in the area of vocational training, especially through training in the areas of entertainment, tourism and other needs resulting from the diagnosis made, training in the areas of socio-cultural and socio-site education and training and adult oriented for citizenship and for the information society.
The ADEPE, with an association to promote local and regional development, which seeks to fit his entire working life in the logic of promoting wellness and quality of populations in the areas of education, training and promotion opportunities and employment, is accredited as a training organization since 1998, when he began his training intervention. This accreditation was first recognized in the field of "Design", "Organization and Promotion" and "Development / Execution." In the application for renewal that followed (in 1999) is now also believed in the "Other Forms of Intervention." In 2005 he was again renewed the accreditation of ADEP in those four areas. Thus, the role of ADEPE while training institute has been relevant in the sense of local and regional development through the promotion of improved social and professional skills of those who seek their services training and has an extensive curriculum of training
Today, the ADEPE is presented with a growing regional dynamics and an assumption of action, supported by concrete actions from the local business network and regional and regional partners whose activity is essential for sustained growth of the territory.
Currently the intervention of this association, underpinned by its principles and objectives of intervention, their actual daily work activities through the implementation of projects such as: Azimute 270 ° Promoted by ADEPE, in partnership with the Youth Association of Peniche, Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth Peniche, Cercipeniche, Schools grouping Atouguia da Baleia, Schools grouping Dom Luís de Ataíde and EB1, 2.3 and the Municipality of Peniche, appears in the 4th Generation of Program Escolhas. . Beginning in January 2010 will be developed until December 2012. The Azimute 270 ° follows on from previous interventions, and the conclusions drawn from the study research "Reading the different social actors of the potential factors of failure and dropping out of school in the Municipality of Peniche", developed under the project's high tide II in which it was possible to identify local needs in terms of social inclusion of children and young people from socioeconomically weaker. This project is based on a logic of local intervention and intends to intervene in four strategic areas, including the promotion of academic and vocational qualifications, entrepreneurship and youth associations and digital inclusion, having as main objectives the promotion of the acquisition of academic and professional skills of young people in situations of low education, the development of activities to promote school success for young people in situations of failure and truancy and promote active citizenship. It should be noted the actions taken by the project within the University of Families, which has developed an enormous amount of parental training with families of children and young recipients of the project, speaking in terms of their level of training to strengthen parenting skills .Another project of our association is the Action Group of the West Coast–GacOeste - GacOeste is a structure that arises under Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund and the Operational Programme for Fisheries PROMAR - 2007-2013, "Sustainable Development of Fisheries Areas", for ongoing support to fishing communities in improving the quality of life and economic development in coastal areas. The basis of the project intervention based on a partnership that has as its fund manager and includes the municipalities ADEP of Nazaré and Peniche, as well as a set of local and regional representative structures of the fisheries sector, namely the Association of Ship-owners and Fishermen Nazareth, Fisheries Ship-owners Ass Local Coastal Zone and Largo Center, Assoc. Mutual F. L. Ship-owners General Fishing Center, Municipality of Nazareth, the city of Peniche, Workers Union Fisheries Center, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria - ESTM, Fishermen's Mutual Association, LeaderOeste, Cooperative of Shipowners of Artisanal Fisheries, Fishing Cooperative General Center, CRL, For-Mar - Operating Unit of the Center of Peniche and Nazaré, NIGEL, Joseph Nicholas Freezer Ltd SA and Luis Silverio. The performance of GAC is based on an integrated local approach and focused on a strategy of local / regional development adapted to different realities, whose area of competence is 17 coastal parishes: Nazaré (Nazaré), Famalicão (Nazaré), S. Martinho do Porto (Leiria), Salir do Porto (Caldas da Rainha), Serra do Bouro (Caldas da Rainha), Foz do Arelho (Caldas da Rainha), Vau (Obidos), Amoreira (Obidos), Olho Marinho (Obidos) Ferrel (Peniche), Ajuda (Peniche), Conceição (Peniche), S. Pedro(Peniche), Atouguia da Baleia (Peniche), Lourinhã (Lourinhã), Atalaia (Lourinhã) Ribamar (Lourinhã).
GacOeste, whose action is supported by activities carried out by ADEPE as fund manager, it is the local regeneration process applications for available funds, about three million euros, and also the subsequent monitoring of the implementation of approved projects, working as partners decentralized Management Unit Program through concrete actions such as reception and analysis of applications, the monitoring of approved projects, analysis of claims, and giving its opinion on the applications and requests for payment. Another project addressed to parents that have children with disabilities or e4ucations needs is “És Especial” (You are Special") The "És Especial" arises from the desire to continue the actions of previous projects (University of the University of parents and families, co-financed by previous generations of the Choices Programme and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation), with co-financing achieved by application of an ADEPE the "Call of Special Education 2011 Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation." This project, is targeted to parents of children with special educational needs and education professionals (teachers, educational assistants action) and is based on an intervention that involves families and technical education as a strategy to raise awareness and knowledge of different educational agents, increasing the promotion of parenting skills, parental involvement in their children's education process and increase the level of technical skills of teachers and education professionals, through the development of training initiatives and workshops for families. The last project that calls, Gabinete de Apoio ao Empreendedor (Entrepreneur Assistance Unit ), Office that promotes a logic of actions promoting entrepreneurship through action disclosure of funding sources, preparation of business plans, applications for funding programs, financial consulting / accounting and legal.
Furthermore ADEPE is a professional training center for active people and unemployed that have many experience in this area.
The Adepe exists at 16 years and we organise projects in the social and cultural areas, an we cooperate with Municipality of Peniche in Youth Week of Peniche, Festival´s os Sea Flavours and with Youth Association of Peniche in national and international exchanges.
-Support the development of the children and young people to convince the children and youth for the acquisition of socials competitions and healthy habits and through the implementation of preventative work and to influence attitude in relation to social exclusion.

- Develop measures included in its annual plan of activities, alone or in collaboration with other entities.

- Contribute to the promotion of economic activities in the Municipality of Peniche and in particular, encourage, assist and advise its members in investment initiatives and better access to programs and initiatives that relate to their activities.

The staff that we have working in our activities is Psychologist and social workers and social educator´s that work with our target group the children and youngsters from the city of Peniche.
