Project Environment

PROJECT ENVIRONMENT:
L'Arche-Kovcheh in Ukraine was officially recognized in 2008 and became a member of the International Federation of L'Arche communities. L'Arche was founded in France in 1964 by Jean Vanier. Today there are more than 130 faith-based communities belonging to the L'Arche federation in 35 countries around the world.

L'Arche is centered on the gifts and needs of people who have mental disabilities and are at the heart of the L'Arche community. Together with young people (assistants) choosing to live with them in small residences, they create a home and participate in meaningful daytime work and activities.

Today L'Arche-Kovcheh in Lviv, Ukraine brings together about 66 persons with mental disabilities and 21 assistants who share community life together in four daily handicraft workshops and afternoon program for those with more profound disabilities. Day-to-day coordination of the Workshop Program is provided by the management team consisting of 5 persons. Here persons with intellectual disabilities ("core members") and assistants-volunteers can express themselves through meaningful work, activity, sharing in friendship, celebration and prayer. Members engage in the creation of beaded artwork, decorative candles, icons, simple woodworking, handy-made paper and greeting card in an atmosphere of love and respect where everyone is equal. They also enjoy cooking, going on outings, praying together and celebrating. The organization opens up the gifts of people with mental disabilities, contributes to their integration into the society and promotes personal and spiritual growth.

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR EVS VOLUNTEERS:
In each of 5 workshops there are approximately 9 -15 people with mental disabilities and 3-5 assistants who work there constantly. Volunteers would participate in daily (Monday-Friday) workshop programs from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. for work, celebration and prayer. They are expected to help people with mental disabilities to make decorative candles, greeting cards, icons, hand-beaded necklaces, woven bags or hand-made paper. These activities can be new for volunteers, so they get a chance to be taught the basic items by the assistants. Volunteers can be also involved in cooking. This allows to cook meals typical of their countries and which can be prepared with the disabled and then enjoyed all together. They can learn the traditional Ukrainian cuisine as well. At the workshop "Smile" for people with more profound disabilities volunteers should be able to assist with art and music activities and at moments help with pushing wheelchairs, access to toilet, or with eating etc. In general, they join the core members in activities, games and helping with some simply craft works. We are always open to new ideas and initiatives from volunteers' side.

Extracurricular program: Volunteers are invited to participate in community gatherings going somewhere for a weekend or camping together; to participate in prayers and sharing. We don't insist on a Christian faith if you join us - we welcome people of any faith. The total number of hours expected for the volunteer is 30-35 hours weekly.

VOLUNTEER PROFILES AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS:
We are glad to welcome young people of all backgrounds, gender and culture and at the same time with the following attitudes:
- Interest in working and motivation to have a relationship with people who have handicap and problems of disabilities.
- Ability to put himself/herself in the relationship with the disabled people being friendly, communicative, responsible, sincere and patient.
- Work in a team and support the community spirit.
- Good mental and physical health.

Volunteer should be open to new things and challenges, new culture and life's conditions therefore to be flexible, adaptable and mature. Basic knowledge of Ukrainian, Russian or Polish language is very welcomed.

RISK PREVENTION, PROTECTION AND SAFETY:
We assure that during the whole project all the key safety requirements will be kept. We guarantee enough time for relax and time for work. On the first day of project volunteers will get the list of all the important public addresses and emergency telephone numbers, map of the city etc. Volunteers will get brochure with contacts and info about members of NGO and contact numbers to mentor and supervisor. Also we will try to start lessons of Ukrainian (especially learning cyrillic letters) as soon as possible to insure volunteer's quick adaptation and possibility to deal with everyday tasks, such as using public transport or buying food.

The mentor will meet with the volunteer at least once per week, and will be ready to help and support more, if it would be needed. The monitoring of learning process and achievements of volunteer will be realised during the project by mentor and project coordinator.

Every week there is a meeting of all assistants. During such meetings we discuss difficult situations, plan next activities, exchange experiences and positive practices. Personnel of this department will support and help volunteers.

The place, where volunteer will live, is situated not far from city centre of Lviv. The place is cosy, welcoming and safe. There is opportunity to keep in contact with home (families, friends, relatives etc) by phone or internet.

The L'Arche is able to host up to 2 EVS volunteers at the same time. The organisation is ready to work with volunteers with fewer opportunities such as: social, economic and geographical obstacles. The organisation doesn't plan to host short-term group EVS projects.

The L'Arche Kovcheh is supported by Academy of Ukrainian Youth as its "contact point for EVS"

Motivation and EVS experience

The community of L'Arche-Kovcheh in Ukraine has been involved in EVS from 2009. Last year L'Arche-Kovcheh in cooperation and with our "contact point for EVS" - NGO "Academy of Ukrainian Youth" has already hosted three long-term EVS volunteers from Poland. One of them even decided to come back for becoming the assistant for intelectually disabled persons with whom we work. We consider this cooperation between organizations to be very successful and, inspired by previous experience, we are willing to invite more volunteers to L'Ache community.

It is important for us to have the international volunteers because they bring an extra dimension and enthusiasm to the work that is going on in the organization. Volunteers are actively encouraged to share their own culture and traditions with our people and this opens a bigger world and wider horizons for those who struggle on a daily level with physical and mental limitations. We believe that volunteers have the opportunity to carry out a non-formal experience, are able to enrich their skills and competences both personally and professionally. It is a great experience for us being enriched by foreign culture, sharing our traditions and knowledge with them.
