The kindergarten Les Mickele is an associative bilingual school located in Strasbourg, at a 5 minutes walking distance from the cathedral and the city centre. The kindergarten is a small structure of 3 classes, welcoming children from 3 to 6 years. Strasbourg is a medium sized town (250 000 citizens) and cosmopolitan. In fact the European parliament, the European Council and the European Court of Human Rights are located in Strasbourg, but you will find also more than 50000 students of all nationalities. You can find cinemas, theaters, an opera, museums but also sports complexes: swimming pools, tennis courts, ice rinks and stages.

Due to its flat relief and the numerous cycle tracks, Strasbourg is the ideal place to discover by bike. For less trained visitors a network of busses and trams enables to travel through the whole agglomeration. Strasbourg also benefits from a high number of architectural and cultural patrimony, highly appreciated by many tourists. This town is very nicely situated for those who like to discover the Alsatian region, the “Vosges” mountains and the black-forest. It takes 2:30 hours to travel to Paris by high-speed train, 2 h to Basel and 4 h to Munich.
During school time from 8h15 am until 4 pm, he/she will interfere and/or accompany the classes in collaboration with the teachers or in semi-autonomy with small groups. The young EVS will never be left alone in a room with a group of children. The basic learnings at the kindergarten are language, graphism and motoric skills: the aim is therefore to make the children speak, sing, paint, count and to control their body without ever forgetting the playful aspect. The young EVS can for example welcome the children in the morning in a class and play with them, subsequently go into another class, assisting in songs and discussions and help put in place the realisation of another activity in another class. He/She will be informed about the accurate working plan of the day and week but is also free to propose projects and share new ideas.
During the extracurricular time (from 16.00 until 18.00) the EVS can participate in the preparation and realisation of festive moments of the kindergarten (Saint Martin’s Day, Xmas, Carneval, annual end of school year celebration) here he/she can share his/her own culture or propose other activities.
The young EVS will work 30 -35 hours a week, depending on the functioning of the kindergarden: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday morning, Thursday and Friday. This means he/she will dispose of two and a half free days each week and will benefit additionally from school vacations (10 days in autumn, 2 weeks around Xmas, 10 days in February/March and 2 weeks at Eastern).

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
***********************************************
The young EVS will perform a service of 10 months (from the beginning of September ¬until the beginning of July) in the association. During his/her stay, the young EVS will be able to discover a new language and a new culture. We offer him to work as a team with partners with different language, culture and ages. Further on he/she will acquire a first significant experience in the field of small child care. The role of the young EVS will be to enrich through his/her presence, his/her culture and his/her language the projects of the kindergarten. His/Her status of additional person to the already present team of educators will enable him/her to interfere in each project and activity at all levels and in various situations at the kindergarten. He/She will be completely integrated in the educative team.

Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
****************************************************
We look for a young EVS who is aware about his/her linguistic and cultural richness and who is willing to share this with us; a dynamic and patient person who shows enthusiasm and takes initiative, shows enough responsibility to treat small children, helping them to learn their first lessons and rules such as the respect of each other and of the group. This implicates from hislher side a high interest and curiosity for small childhood, an attentive and complaisant contact without ever forgetting security rules, personal attitude and know-how that are crucial for the work with small children.
The young EVS will be chosen among spontaneous applications sent to the kindergarten and those that are proposed by sending organisations. Candidates will be contacted by phone for a detailed interview (project and motivation) and the association’s office will be in charge of studying the applications and will make its final decision. Due to the fact that our kindergarten is bilingual (French / German), it is preferable but not compulsory that the young EVS is fluent in the German language. We are willing to collaborate with all sending organisations presenting us with potential candidates.

The young EVS will be housed in the students hall of residence of the association "STIFT" (http://www.lestifl.org/) in a calm yet central neighbourhood of Strasbourg. He/She will benefit from lunch at the kindergarten during his/her working time. He will dispose of a bike or public transport monthly ticket and we offer him/her to take French as a Foreign Language courses at the university or at the adult education centre.
He/she will have an advisor at the kindergarten and a tutor among the parents of the children. He/she will be accompanied by his/her tutor for all administrative formalities or any difficulty. A weekly supervision is foreseen with the tutor, who will be approachable at any moment and who will give him/her the possibility to find a shelter in case he/she feels depressed. Given the profile of children we work with (early childhood) we can not for the moment welcome EVSs with specific needs nor minor EVS.

Motivation and EVS experience

Our association ABCM Les Mickele is a structure located in Strasbourg of ABCM-Zweisprachigkeit which aims to develop bilingualism from the kindergarten on. Aware of the fact that the linguistic and cultural input can only benefit from multiplicity and willing to bring up our children to become European citizens, it is only natural that we should turn to the program Youth in Action to encourage a young European to enrich our school with his/her language and culture such as an additional opening to our functioning and different activities that we are proposing.

Every year since 2008/09 we already had very positive experiences by welcoming young EVSs and we are convinced of the effectiveness and benefit from the presence of these young and motivated people. That is the reason why we wish to prolong our accreditation.

We are also aware of the fact that many youngsters do not know yet what to do in their future or do not always have the possibility of testing concretely their ideas and vocation. Enabling a young European to live with us during a school year, we will offer him/her the possibility to discover a new town, a new region, a new country, and an associative as well as a professional surrounding.

Description of the organisation

ABCM-Les Mickele is an associative kindergarten existing in Strasbourg since approximately 20 years. It is managed by the parents and has as aim to favor the learning of bilingualism (French -German -Alsatian dialect) and its affected cultures from the age of three.
During our work we follow the French national curriculum as well as the one from Baden-Württemberg. The school opens 4 days during the week: Monday -Tuesday, Thursday -Friday alternating every two days between the French and German teachers according to the rule “one person, one language”.
We also offer an extracurricular time: in the morning from 7h30 until 8h15 am and in the afternoon from 4h00 until 6h15 pm.
Children are aged from 3 to 6 years and divided into three classes: 2 small/middle sections (3-5 years); one elder section (5-6 years). We welcome about 20 to 25 children per class; this means a maximum of 75 children in the school.
Our team consists of 4 teachers: a French and a German full-time teachers, a French and a German half-time teachers, 3 assistants helping the teachers during the classes and a young European coming from the German Red Cross.
The functioning of the schools is locally managed by the parents, represented by an office, and at a regional level by the association ABCM Zweisprachigkeit, which gathers all associative bilingual structures from the Alsatian region. The local association manages the extracurricular activities, whereas the regional association manages the pedagogical aspects. The active participation of each parent is necessary for the good functioning of the school.
We welcome children from all origins (social and internatlonal) and of all religions if their parents show interest in bilingualism and cultural openness on one hand, and in associative committment on the other hand.
