Association Solidarités Jeunesses Réseau d'Entraide, SJREV
description of organisation
Solidarités Jeunesses Languedoc-Roussillon is an association that organises international work camps for young volunteers. It is the regional delegation of a national movement (Solidarités Jeunesses), which itself is member of international networks: The CCIVS (Coordinating Committe of International Voluntary Service) and Alliance.of European Voluntary Service Organisations.
We organise short-term international work camps for the duration of three weeks ; long-term work camps for three months to one year ; ponctual cultural activities (carnaval, projects with schools, …) and actions for the promotion of volunteering and the international mobility.
All our activities turn around the work camp pedagogy: international and intercultural meetings, taking care of daily life and the budget collectively, discovery of and implication in a local setting, realisation of a concrete project with public utility.
motivation and evs experience
As a hosting organisation:
Since the beginnings of the EVS programmes fifteen years ago, Solidarités Jeunesses REV has hosted about one hundred EVS short- and longterm volunteers. In 2004 the hosting of EVS volunteers had to be interrupted due to the loss of the hosting center. Until 2007 the association has been creating a new center to host volunteers on a long term basis and the also EVS volunteers are hosted again since this date.
The possibilities offered by our project to the volunteers are concrete and in coherence with the values and objectives of the
Today collectivity has become an important dimension of the EVS programme, which corresponds perfectly to our practice and experience. It seems important to us to offer to the European volunteers a time of learning in the framework of an association of Popular Education as is ours.
For 30 years we have been organising summer work camps (three week stays) in the Region of Languedoc-Roussillon, during which we also host disadvantaged youngsters with specific mentoring and a close partnership with the sending organisations.
We would like to host in our center:
3 to 5 EVS volunteers per year, for a duration of 9 to 12 months (2 hosting requests submitted to the regional committee per year: European volunteers, the other requests having been made by the partner organisations and/or by the national agency or the executive agency: non-European volunteers). The international mix that seems interesting to us in voluntary services is now possible in the framework of the EVS with the opening of Europe to
neighbour partner countries and the other countries in the world.
1 youth with less opportunity at a time for duration of 3 weeks to 2 months.
For the summer period we would like to host 1 youth with less opportunities on each international work camp who will be able to host a youth (also 3 to 6 youth during 1 month between June and September)
We have the opportunity to host 'JAMO' (young with less opportunities) volunteers in two actions:
action « International work camp»
action « hosting of international volunteers» :
Our experience with the voluntary service and in the social domain has provided us with the necessary tools to work with this public.
A special support is organised for this type of hosting volunteers. It consists in :
an in-depth preparation considering the difficulties of the person hosted. This task is done in close cooperation with the sending organisation and the volunteer in order to reach full understanding of the special needs of the volunteer
supervision in every-day life by the animator responsible for the volunteers
tutoring of the other volunteers of the group. All members of the group should be sensibilised for the situation of the JAMO to be able to react according to different circumstances or to alert an animator if the need is felt
a regular meeting with the mentor, on a weekly basis or if the volunteer asks for it
The work to be done by the volunteer will be defined with the technical animator who is already familiar with this kind of volunteers hosted (experience through work with persons in inclusion projects on our work camps).
Our center is not furnished to receive physically handicapped persons and we do not have the competences to host heavily mentally handicapped volunteers.
Founded in 1974 by a small group of locals, le Réseau d'Entraide Volontaire has become regional delegation of Solidarités Jeunesses in 1979. It is an association working with the methods of Popular Education, acknowledged by the ministry of Youth and Sport .
The seat of the association is located in Beauvoisin, Gard, in the Vauvert canton in the small Camargue. The association owns two houses in the community; a bigger one which hosts the offices of the association and where about ten persons and occasionally small groups can be hosted (the house of the volunteers); a smaller one serves as housing for the staff members.
The association develops different actions:
Work camps for international volunteers . These are actions that assemble about fifteen international youngsters around the realisation of a concrete work (restoration of cultural heritage, environmental education, installation of communal structures, …) with the objective of intercultural exchange.
Hosting of volunteers during the whole year in a group of 6 to 8 persons that participates in a long term work camp, which allows the creation of a local and regional dynamic of promotion of the voluntary service with young locals (in colleges, BIJ, on the occasion of special thematic days, …). Also volunteers participate in local development through animation activities realised in partnership with schools, other cultural associations (theatre, carnival, circus, …) or
communities (in the context of the PEL, local educational project). Volunteers can be hosted in the settings of a EVS,
the civic service, the OFAJ, but also without any of these official frameworks, which allows a mix of more different cultures and enriches the encounters.
Hosting of groups (10 people max) during one week generally sent by a social educative partner
hosting of youth (15 to 19 years old) needing a break from their everyday life in partnership with our social educative partners
The association is guided by an administrative council which supervises the permanent team made up of employees and volunteers.
a regional delegate who organises the work camp season, coordinates the team and assures the coherence of the actions itogether with the national movement
a technical animator who is in charge of supervising the international volunteers at the work camp, available for certain leisure activities, and who prepares the technical part of the work camp season.
A responsible for hosting volunteers and other persons, in charge of the organisation of the house as well as of the daily accompanying (administrative, financial, pedagogical) of the volunteers.
✔Beauvoisin is a village that has 3 500 inhabitants, situated in the Camargue, 35km away from the sea side and 60km from the Cevennes. It is located at 15km from Nîmes in a rural area in which the main activities are the production of wine, fruits and the raising of bulls and horses. The hosting center is situated in the centerof the village where all essential shops can be found.
Even though the village is close to Nîmes, public transport are rare but developing. There are many activities available in Beauvoisin, offered by the municipality and the many local associations (tennis, soccer, karate, theatre, cabaret, dance, …) even though some are not accessible all year long.
Beauvoisin is situated in the department of the Gard in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon. It is a very sunny region, very hot in summer, rain is hard and the “Mistral” wind blows often and strongly. The region is very much appreciated by tourists, thanks to its natural environment, the richness of its cultural heritage and its still flowering traditions.
✔ Volunteers are hosted in a village house that has been transformed in a small hosting center: one flat for an employee and the office, three rooms with three beds each, collective kitchen and bathroom. A living room is at free disposition for the volunteers. The Bathroom and toilets are shared by everyone. Volunteers and team members work as a collective. They prepare meals in turns for everyone, meals are taken together at fixed hours.
Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
We aim at the construction of a social Europe, for peace, respect and tolerance and for this we rely on intercultural exchanges.
Our objectives in hosting volunteers can be defined on different levels:
make intercultural exchange possible in all our actions
introduce a European and International dimension in our actions enrich the experience of all target groups by a social and cultural mix
stimulate local development by working with the communities and local associations
give the occasion to young French and to the association to confront new ideas coming from different cultures and give occasion for EVS volunteers to live this same confrontation
✔ The volunteer participates in the different activities of the association, being a member of a group of 6 to 8 young European and other volunteers.
He/she works 30 hours per week on the long term work camp. The manual work can be masonry, indoor constructions, gardening, etc.
He/she learns to use certain techniques of construction, renovation, etc.
He/she participates in the organisation of every-day life, kitchen, cleaning, managing the budget for groceries and for leisure activities which is a collective responsibility of all the inhabitants.
He/she has the possibility to take part in different local activities, work in school with the teachers, do theatre, animations, … This will allow him/her to discover the environment he/she lives in.
He/she will open up to other cultures, social, political, economic systems
He/she practises a kind of intelligent tourism by discovering the region through its geographical and culinary richness as well as through its sociopolitical complexity
He/she learns or improves the French language in every day life and in language classes
The role of the volunteer is to give a European/international as well as voluntary and dynamic dimension to local projects in order to mobilise the local population and to make them become actors of the communal life.
✔Usual planning (changes are made due to special activities and the volunteers' projects): Approximately one week end per month an associative activity is realised: a moment where all
members can meet and open to the local population (information are given on posters or the monthly
review of the village).
Regularly we organise evenings with:
an international meal, for which one volunteer prepares a typical dish for his/her country and speaks about the culture, traditions, everyday-life of the country
a typical regional meal prepared by locals, with discussions around the project of the association, social, political, economic or environmental topics of current information.
Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
We closely work with the National Office of Solidarités Jeunesses. Indeed, the long term coordinator is in direct connection with our partners abroad. The coordinator regularly meets partners (through the CCIVS and the Alliance meetings) and close contact is maintained by email and telephone. This ensures suitability between volunteers and projects, as well as a quality follow-up throughout the volunteering period.
The volunteers' profile:
Youngsters from 18 to 30 years old, in particular youngsters with less opportunities. Youngsters from 15 to 17 on teenage work camps.
Hosted in the center : international volunteers, having access to the EVS programme and others, non- European volunteers.
Recruitment procedure :
Our participation in national and international activities in the domain of hosting public with special needs (step by step) and our affiliation with a national movement which itself is member and actor of different international networks allow us to work in close collaboration with our partners.
Contacts are established and meetings organised especially with new partners in order to guarantee a hosting procedure that meets the expectations of all partners, for the whole duration of the action and for its evaluation.
A real work around the partnerships is done for both sending and hosting projects, for best working conditions based on knowledge, confidence, and availability.
No selection is made. At the same time, it is important for us to know the motivation and/or problems of the volunteers before arrival.
the will of the person to be engaged in such a project his/her determination to adapt to a new environment
To assure transparency in the recruitment of the volunteers we are committed to a strong partnership which manifests itself during encounters with the partner's representatives during different activities, seminars, evaluation meetings in which we take part.
No professional or educational training is necessary for our activities, but preparation for a voluntary service is essential.
Collective life is of a great richness through the encounters it creates. It also means constraints on a daily basis since one lives with persons one has not chosen to live with and does not know very well. House rules are necessary to allow individuals to function together in the project, the project itself being based in the village. Everyone will be able to take time for him- or herself to take some distance to the project or for some stocktaking of oneself.
The person responsible for the volunteers remains available outside the collective moments and individual meetings if the volunteer feels the need for this contact or if we judge it necessary.
Number of volunteers
We can host 8 volunteers maximum in our center.
The group will be made up of volunteers with different set-ups (EVS, OFAJ, civil service, 'long term volunteer, ...)
Risk prevention, protection and safety
✔ Material and emotional security:
￮ Good prior information about the hosting conditions: a description that correspond to the reality and
that allows the volunteers to get a clear picture of the place they will live in for a certain time.
￮ Every volunteer has his/her own equipment to work in security; clothes, shoes and working gloves
￮ The team of employees has the role:
to guarantee that individual commitments in the project of the association are respected to make sure that the house rules are respected
to provide guidance in the organisation of every day life (meals, respect of working hours, ...)
to provide guidance in the organisation of activities (discovering the region, sports, culture, personal projects, …)
to provide technical guidance at the work place
to guarantee that the bio-rythm of teenagers is respected , as well as particular needs of volunteers (emotional, educational, legal)
￮ the team of employees puts into practice the pedagogical project starting from common values:
all individuals are equal: only the level of knowledge and experience changes, not the worth of the person
mutual exchange: everyone can learn something from the others mutual respect
everyone is being put into a situation of responsibility in a reassuring context the right to commit errors: reciprocal confidence
✔ Means of guidance and evaluation:
weekly evaluation with the whole group and technical animator and tutor
regular individual evaluation in a rhythm to be fixed with the volunteer but at least every second month with the tutor
fonctionnement souple : si un point est nécessaire à n’importe quel moment, à la demande du volontaire ou de l’équipe ou d’autres, il est réalisé rapidement, collectivement ou individuellement
for the mentor: regular evaluations with the coordinating association, the partner organisation and the volunteer.
✔Modes of information and communication at disposition for the volunteers:
A computer with internet access is at free disposition for the volunteers. Different services are thus easily accessible (facebook, skype, …)
The telephone in the office (land line) is at disposition for the volunteers for 'official' calls (regarding a job, school, administration, …)
This organisation is willing to involve volunteers who face situations which make their participation in activities more difficult, from the following categories for different types of project:
- Educational difficulties
- Social obstacles
- Cultural differences
