When to go to a hospital
If you suddenly become very ill or have an accident, you may need to go to the emergency room. Thy are usually part of a hospital. If you have a less serious illness it’s better to go to a regular clinic. In Swedish they are called ”vårdcentral” or ”husläkarmottagning”.
In almost all of Sweden healthcare is free until you turn 20. Moreover, everyone (including those without a residency permit) who are under 18 has a right to healthcare. You can read about the cost of a doctor’s visit online, if you are not eligible for free healthcare. It is important to know that you will not pay more than 1100 SEK for healthcare per year. Once you've paid that much, the rest of your doctor's visits or hospital visits are free. However, this does not cover medication.
Remember your teeth
A lot of people worry about going to the dentist, and it's true that it is often very expensive. But you’re going to live with your teeth for a long time, so take care of them! Until the end of the year of your 19th birthday, dental care is free. Even after that, if you can’t pay an expensive dentist bill, there is help to be found: for example, you can divide up the payment in several installments or apply for a dental care stipend from the state. Talk to your dentist, they can help you!
