These rights are laid down in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, approved over 60 years ago. The Declaration is worth reading. Being aware of human rights is the first step towards promoting and defending them.
The Universal Declaration has been accepted by almost all states and is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 380 languages and dialects.
Human Rights Day
The Universal Declaration was adopted on 10 December 1948, and since then Human Rights Day has been celebrated worldwide on that date. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights plays a major role in coordinating efforts for Human Rights Day.
Work for human rights
Amnesty International defends people whose human rights have been violated throughout the world. You can help by joining yourself; as a member, you will receive emails about human rights campaigns and opportunities to take action. You can also become a volunteer, and support local initiatives. Find out if there is an Amnesty International Office in your region.
If you are interested in a career in human rights, then Human Rights Watch offers internship opportunities (most of them unpaid) in many of the organisation’s offices around the world. Just look for the position you find the most interesting and apply.
