From 1 July to 31 December 2013 Lithuania holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time since the country joined the EU in 2004.
The Lithuanian Presidency is the second of the Trio Presidency with Ireland and Greece. The three members states have agreed on a common structure for the 18 months period.
Every Member State holding the EU Presidency has a list of tasks: setting up the EU priorities for the next six months, mediation and preparing ground for compromises among Member States, organising the work of the Council, organising and chairing meetings of committees and various working groups.
