Thessaloniki, a student city situated in the Thermaikos Gulf on the Aegean, has a programme for the year based on the topics like culture, innovation, volunteering, youth participation, environment, sports and creativity. The European Youth Capital not only hosts a series of actions and events, but also embraces activities from numerous citizens' movements, groups and individuals with a common philosophy.
Big scale youth events will take place during the year, including the Youth Event of the Greek Presidency, campaigns for the European Parliament elections, European Parliament and United Nations simulations for students and many competitions. In cooperation with the local civil society network, the city's youth organisations and with the support of EU, the Council of Europe, the UN, the Greek Presidency and a large number of Foundations, the programme in 2014 will give the city an open youth laboratory profile.
The Youth Capital title was launched by the European Youth Forum to encourage the development of new ideas and innovative projects with regards to the active participation of young people in society and to foster the co-operation on youth policies at local and European level.
