Greece takes the Presidency of the EU

Between 1 January and 1 July 2014 Greece holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the fifth time since the country joined the EU in 1981.

The Greek Presidency is the last one of the Trio Presidency with Ireland and Lithuania. The three members states have agreed on a common structure for the 18 months period.

Every Member State holding the EU Presidency has a list of tasks: setting up the EU priorities for the next six months, mediation and preparing ground for compromises among Member States, organising the work of the Council, organising and chairing meetings of committees and various working groups.

The Greek Presidency will work on:

  • promoting sustainable economic growth and jobs and cohesion
  • strengthening the further integration of the EU and the eurozone
  • highlighting the positive aspects of a comprehensive migration and mobility
  • recognizing the benefits of marine and maritime activities

You can find the full programme and priorities of the Greek Presidency on the official website.
