World Youth Day – Europe was there, too!

Ján Figel' addressing thousands of young people

Europe had a high profile at the World Youth Day in Cologne from 16 to 21 August 2005: the fact that 70% of the participants came from Europe made this major event a significant European youth encounter. Many European themes were discussed, European artistic performances took place and the European institutions were present through an EU information stand. Ján Figel', the European Commissioner in charge of youth, attended several of the events in Cologne and met with participants. He gave a welcome address in front of tens of thousands of young people and appealed to them to engage themselves actively in society.

At the request of the European Parliament, the Commission has granted € 1.5 million for the support of 20.000 volunteers. Furthermore, a European Voluntary Service project (EU YOUTH programme) allowed 100 young volunteers from 20 countries to have an important intercultural and non-formal learning experience while helping with the implementation of the event.

The EU's funding programmes are generally open to any kind of organisations that identify with the Union's values and whose proposals are in line with the aims and criteria of the respective programme.
