Between 1 January and 1 July 2014 Greece holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the fifth time since the country joined the EU in 1981.
The Greek Presidency is the last one of the Trio Presidency with Ireland and Lithuania. The three members states have agreed on a common structure for the 18 months period.
Every Member State holding the EU Presidency has a list of tasks: setting up the EU priorities for the next six months, mediation and preparing ground for compromises among Member States, organising the work of the Council, organising and chairing meetings of committees and various working groups.
