The annual European Week of Sport is designed to encourage a healthier lifestyle through physical activity. Focusing on grassroots initiatives, it showcases opportunities for all - regardless of age, background or fitness level.

The European Week of Sport is a response to encourage all Europeans to get up and #BeActive. It is a truly European movement that began in 2015 and has inspired millions of people in 32 countries to #BeActive in their daily lives.

One week, 32 countries, 34 000 events, 12 million participants: the 2017 European Week of Sport was a week to remember. Europeans everywhere took on the #BeActive challenge and embraced opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity.

There were also plenty of opportunities to try out new sports, from archery to aquatics to martial arts. Take a look at some of the highlights from this year’s events.

Engagement in sport and physical activity is at an all-time low. In many Member States, this is a trend getting worse, not better. It’s not just people’s health and well-being that suffers; it’s our society and economy overall.
