The number of international migrants — persons living in a country other than where they were born — reached 244 million in 2015.

The Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs estimates the global number of international migrants at regular intervals, monitors levels, trends and policies related to international migration, and collects and analyses information on the relationship between international migration and development. The dataset represents the most recent information available on numbers of international migrants for all countries or areas of the world.

International Migrants’ Day

The UN has declared18 December International Migrants Day – to mark the day in 1990 when it adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. The idea behind the day is to spread information on migrants’ human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, through the sharing of experiences and campaigns to protect migrants’ rights.

On Radio 1812 you can listen to radio programmes from stations all over the world making migrants' voices heard.

Associated problems

Many migrants and their families are victims of a wide range of human rights abuses. Irregular and illegal migration has become one of the major issues of our time, with human trafficking becoming a significant worldwide concern.
