AA, or Alcoholics Anonymous, is an international body of alcoholics, who work collaboratively to improve their lifestyle.

What is AA?

AA, or Alcoholics Anonymous, is an international body of alcoholics, who work collaboratively to improve their lifestyle. They were created by two Americans, who suffered from alcoholism, in the thirties. AA has been operating in Iceland since 1954.
 

What are AA meetings?

AA meetings are meetings that alcoholics attend to work together on recovering from alcoholism and enjoying life free from alcohol and drugs.
 

Where do you find your AA meetings in Iceland?

On the AA website you can find a list of meetings (http://www.aa.is/pages.php?idpage=332 ) in Iceland. There are over 250 such meetings a week, all over the country, in almost all municipalities.
 

Are there any restrictions to attend AA meetings?

You just need to have a desire to stop drinking, or stop your drug consumption.
AA meetings are not just for those who have problems with alcohol. Those who are in trouble with other drugs can also go to AA meetings. There are also special sessions for people who have drug addictions ; NA, Narcotics Anonymous. (http://Nai.is)
 

Can I go to AA meetings even if I don’t  want to stop drinking?

What if one is afraid to attend a AA meeting?

It's okay to go alone to AA meetings, the fact is most people do. New people are always welcome. No claims are made ​​for you to speak,  if you don’t want it your self. Everything that  goes on in an AA meeting is completely confidential. If you know someone at the meeting, it is ok, since both are there to improve their well-being and life and there is nothing to be ashamed of.
 

If I attend one AA meeting, am I registered in the organization ?

Although you attend one AA meeting, there will be no obligation to come back if you don’t want to. People show up as they want. Going to AA meetings does not mean that one can never drink again, that is a private matter.
 

Does it cost anything to attend AA meetings?

No. Admission is free. Often, however,  there’s a  jar, where people can give donations for coffee and cost of the meeting place, but it is not required of new recruits to contribute money.
